Help making 4.2ghz stable - Page 2

Oh and try your ram at 9-9-9 at first and if it works you can tighen it from there.

Okay found them
Here you go, the only thing is the first pic is wrong on the ( QPI/Dram Core Voltage of 1.3500) I must have been doing higher clocks that day 1.28-1.30 should be fine for 4.2GHz

Hmm, tried your exact settings to see what happens. I put the ram back to 9-9-9-24 as well.

So far it's running prime but it's only been minutes. Peak temps during BLEND so far 80/82/80/80C and I cranked my silver arrow almost all the way down. It was backed off a few turns and was peaking at 82 so I cranked it down basically all the way, same temps!

My chip runs 4.0 at 1.30625vcore like its nothing but 4.2 is brutal for it.

I think when my room heats up a bit this won't be doable.

Those temps are not high..Intel says 100c .
For testing at 1.375v thats about what you should expect with a high end cooler
Thats why you spent the big bucks for the Silver Arrow. too get that extra opphm
Edit: You will not see those temps beyond testing, just gaming, or video editing you wont see over 75c most of the time...

Wasn't stable with those settings. I'm not sure how long prime ran because I went out but windows had rebooted when I got back. I thought I should be aiming for temps in the 70's for a 24/7 overclock? I might be able to get it stable with a bit more vcore I'm just nervous I'll kill the chip with heat and the extra 200mhz isn't going to do much for me. I ran vantage at 4.2 and it completed just fine, so I know it's close to stable. I've gamed for an hour or two at 4.2 before as well, also fine. Prime has never been fine at 4.2 though.

Some of the voltages I use for my 24/7 4.0ghz settings are different from what you're using. For example:

CPU PLL 1.98
QPI/DRAM 1.3500
IOH 1.24
ICH 1.30
DRAM Bus [Auto]

For those ones, you have them a bit lower than I (or set to Auto). Think raising those voltages up a bit would assist in getting 4.2 stable? I tried before and it didn't do much but I also stopped at 1.3500vcore last time.

I'll be honest, I don't know much about those voltages. The last time I took overclocking seriously was when vcore and vdimm was all people cared about.

I never thought it would be stable, those are absolute numbers that I found for my chip, but I figured for plug and play it would get you very close, and it sounds like it did Every chip is diffrent.
Now you have to work on stable from here on out, at least you know you can reach your desired OC
Your temps are good and you just need to fine tune.
Here is a great guides,

http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overc...beginners.html

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...920-930-a.html

The last one has a BSOD codes for overclocking, that can be very helpfull.

CPU PLL 1.98
QPI/DRAM 1.3500
IOH 1.24
ICH 1.30
DRAM Bus [Auto]
( These are just the way I showed them, mostly stock! ) except for the QPI/dram,like I said above.

For those ones, you have them a bit lower than I (or set to Auto). Think raising those voltages up a bit would assist in getting 4.2 stable? I tried before and it didn't do much but I also stopped at 1.3500vcore last time.

That is about all I have done!
BCLK 21x200
CPU 1.375v
Dram Bus Voltage 1.66v
QPI/Dram Core Volt 1.2875v
Everything is at stock, and I showed the settings in the bios that where changed.
Same cpu, mobo same amount of ram, you have to be so darn close

Another thing to speed it along is test with IntelBurnTest v2.50, Stress Maximum, threads 8, burn settings at 3 and when you are happy then test for 1 hour.
IntelBurnTest v2.50, will put way more stress and heat on you cpu than Prime95 ever will!!

If all passes do a overnight Prime95 if you want....you should be golden

Your might be more or less, don't worry you good to 100c, and it is only for testing, it will never get that hot for everyday use,or gaming!! Never!!! S
Someone else please tell him, he seems very nervious about the heat, and he should be causous, but that S/A will keep your CPU cool all the way to 4.4-4.5GHz and up to about 1.45-1.5V
You said that Prime 95 restarted? If you used my settings then just bump your CPU Voltage 2 times, all the way to 1.4V for 4.2GHz.
But make sure you check out the guides I listed above You are about 90-95% of the way to 4.2GHz

Lol, don't get me wrong. I know what I'm doing. I just don't know the fine tunings of alot of those voltages anymore. I haven't spent much time reading into it. I've overclocked plenty of chips I'm just a tad out of the loop.

I'm a little surprised you say up to 100c is fine, but I guess it's possible.

I'll try with more vcore and see what happens.
