Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H Core Unlock

Thread Starter
Hi,

Planning to build a quad core machine but i am on a very tight budget. Was wondering if this motherboard supported the ability to unlock hidden cores on a Phenom II x2 550 BE? According to gigabytes website it does but some people on the internet cant seem to unlock cores. I guess if I had to I might be able to stop being a tightwad and do a few more oddjobs to raise the extra £45 for a Phenom II x4 955. The build will be used as a home server and media centre. I could also get a cheaper biostar motherboard but it would be mATX and i dont think it would support as much OC. It would definately support core unlocking though. I'm in a real dilemma and don't know what to do!

Warmest Regards

Can't really go for that as i need something with integrated graphics. I'll probably go for the X4 rather than risk getting a X2 and then finding out its faulty/wont unlock. I don't know whether to get this gigabyte mobo then or to just get a Biostar TA890GXB HD - I will be OC'ing but not by loads and loads - Maybe to a comfortable 3.6/7 GHZ. I was just thinking that the biostar is probably crappier, doesn't have USB3 and only costs £20 less than the gigabyte. Which way should I sway?

i have the motherboard and it is doing good. the 800 series amd motherboards give you a better over overclock over the lower 700 or lower motherboards. i can go higher on the oc of mine but my ram which is the 1333mhz is holding me back from going any further. im waiting to get 2x4gb 1600mhz ram to push the cpu to hopefully 3.7ghz or even to my goal of 3.8ghz

what cpu ar you gonna use and tell me later how well it over clocks. and np my ram is at 1401mhz oc'd and 1.635v and idk how stable it was but if i go any higher to 265x14 im only stabel for one day then it starts to crash and when i reboot it will be stable for another 24 hours. im thinking about the corsair xms3 1600mhz kit since i plan to get the phenom ii x6 series but do not know which one i saw it oc'd to 4.29 or higher on this forum with the same motherboard. plus the cosmos s case and other's.

It should unlock, but remember unlocking is a bonus

Would not try to unlock an x2, save for x4 or get athlon ii x4. There are also cheaper locked multiplier phenom ii x4s than the 955. Look for any of the 8 series phenom iis (other than the 840 they have 4mb l3 cache) or lower 900 series. The 945 @ 3 ghz will still give a good oc with the right motherboard.
