[Salon] What happens when computers stop shrinking? - Page 3

Maybe they will take a breather from stuffing more cores into a processor - and start spending some time to make software that can take advantage of the processing that is available. Very few bits of software even take advantage of 486 instructions, let alone Pentium anything.

I'd like to see effort put into stuff that really hasn't been pushed, like higher capacity Static RAM, which could shove the inefficiencies and kludges of Dynamic RAM. Processors could zoom ahead if they didn't have three levels of caching and prefetching going on, if a processor had 4GB of SRAM directly coupled on board.

It would be a revolution, just like SSD is a level above HDD technology. I'd like to see SSD mature, not only in capacity, but in the removal of write cycle failures, so that wear levelling is no longer needed.

Computers could also be made more power efficient, less watts used, less heat, less waste. This is something that is already happening, but if they can't shrink, then they can make it more efficient with more agressive design measures.

Interesting article, +1, thanks.

I kind of knew about the limits of Moore's law regarding the miniaturization of transistors, but I hadn't thought about the economic consequences. I wish he had gone a little more into that.

The memory hierarchy is based on cost-benefit. Unless you can come up with memory that is faster and cheaper than current L1, there will always be levels.

Wear-leveling will always be need for NAND... even if you have NAND capable of 10M P/E. There is a performance benefit of distributing data.

Edit - if you did that though, you probably wouldn't be able to use it. We probably won't get any smaller than today's netbooks. If it were any smaller, we wouldn't be able to fit a keyboard that's big enough for our fingers to type on.
