it's not really that hard. ive started plenty w/ just a twig sharpened at the end, a piece of flat wood and some hay. the key is they all have to be very dry. if there's any dampness it's not going to happen. but if its dry its pretty easy. just takes a little practice.

The great part of science is that no one will ever know the truth... We just pursue a path that has been assumed based upon methods learned throughout human history.

I have done it on numerous occasions during survival training. Realistically, if you have had some practice with this sort of thing it really isn't that difficult.

Last time I ended up using a shoe-lace instead of a normal string for the bow, took a while and my hands were numb, but I got me some fire.

On topic: I have made fire with out any tools a few times. It hard when it's windy, but I think all of us here could do it. Be proud Promethean males and females ocn'ers!

Yeah that was a lulz worthy read. Here's a short excerpt: "The Earth's magnetic field is decaying at the rate of about 5 % every 100 years. This means that about 1450 years ago it was twice as strong as it is today, and 2900 years ago it was four times as strong"

Hey remind me again what 5% of nothing is?

But back on topic, skating on thin ice anyways.

The only time I've ever started a fire without matches was with a flint and steel

it is also around the same time when other hominid species, except for the great apes, started to disappear, it is thought that homo sapiens were the most aggressive, and wiped out our competing cousins.

That could be construed as borderline rascist, you're suggesting that societies which are still or until the very recent past were hunter gatherer's, which was much of Sub Saharan Africa, Tropical climates throughout the world and Australasia were basically a sub-human species because they hadn't evolved farming.

Oh yeah... I forgot you had much of North America that was inhabited by people who didn't farm too.

Yes. Then again, I used to be very outdoorsy.

... Having said that, I used a steel knife to carve things, but that's largely because I didn't feel like having to craft my own tools from either bone or stone. At the end of the day, if I hadn't used wood shavings from the wooden base that I used, I'd've used either hair mixed with dried mushrooms (a few fungi you can find around here locally are very flammable), shredded leaves, or any one of a huge number of similar kindlings. I have a nice little pot that I keep kindling in. I also tend to keep some home-made waterproof matches, and a cheap candle in there too, but this time I wasn't using them.

Let me tell you that the hardest part of making the bow for someone who's not used to it is finding a material that will substitute string.

Also know that it takes a long time to get going (at least, if you're not used to it). It took me nearly ten minutes to start a fire... Because the bow just made embers that I had to put into a small bundle of kindling and then blow on for nearly a minute before actual flames started.

... Oh, and there were three of us. It took us ten minutes collectively, since moving it for that long really begins to wear on your hands.

Anyone else do anything similar? We figured it'd be a good way to spend an hour in scouts when we were supposed to be teaching others how to start a fire.
