Time for an upgrade. Need feedback.

Thread Starter
Hello all. Its been quite a while since I have made any significant upgrades to my computer, so with my tax return + bonus check from work, I figure its time to do an overhaul.

A list of new parts that I want to get:

Proc- AMD Phenom II x4 965
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103727

Mobo- ASUS Crosshair IV Formula
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131644

RAM- G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231314

PSU- COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 1000W 80 PLUS BRONZE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171049

Video Card- SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6870 1Gb 256-bit GDDR5(2 of them in Xfire)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102909

SSD- Intel X25-M 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820167035

HDD- Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284

Using my sig rig case and CPU cooling, I believe I could get a decent OC out of that chip unless I missed something when researching.

Any feedback about this build is greatly appreciated.

P.S. I have used ATI video cards since I started building computers, but I have no problem switching to nvidia if you have any recommendations.

All good, but If you can go for a 6950 2gb and maybe look at a different PSU 850w should be plenty (antec, corsair).

U dont need a 1000watt psu for that setup,
get a corsair tx750,that is more than enough even if u crossfire in future,
for the cpu I suggest u to get a much better cpu for little more money:
phenomII x6 1055t
for the gpu get:
hd6950 2gb(unlock it to a hd6970)
its only $244 at newegg, much better than hd6870,
Hope u like my suggestions

Price cuts in the 6950 ever since the GTX560 came out mean that you can easily switch it in favor of the 6870, which has lost it's lustre ever since Fermi's GTX460 wiped it out.

Also, a good 850Watt PSU can do the job of powering that system.

Have you considered Sandy Bridge? It's awesome, try a 2500k setup!

I'd say buy only 4 gigs of ram and a 750 watt power supply and upgrade to a 6950. Both the 1000 watts and 8 gigs is massive overkill. (The extra ram is only good if your video editing alot).

There weren't any price cuts that I have seen, just the 1gb versions are cheaper than the 2gb

2500k + 6950 2gb + 850w if you want to cf, ~650w would be more than enough for a single 6950. Take funds by dropping 8gb ram to 4gb if needed.

Alternatively upgrade the chip on your current mobo and keep using ddr2 for the time being (not a significant performance difference, unless you get a really good kit of ddr3). AMD is only an attractive platform at a lower price point or in upgrades. A new CPU and new graphics card(s) would be a solid upgrade, and you could worry about a new motherboard and ddr3 on a newer platform than am3.

cpu support list for your current board
http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=ufZUFHN96LlrLL9J

it will take any of the phenom ii chips with a bios update.

The Asus Cosshair and 1000W PSU seem to be complete overkill for the build. These 2 components do work well together, in a system that is intended to have all those PCIE slots filled with top of the pay-grade GPUs. Outside of that application, it's just big numbers, fancy names, and bragging rights that produce nothing in return.

If you can't wait for bulldozer, then this budget has Sandy Bridge written all over it.

Drop to less PSU unless you have plans for MASSIVE crossfire/SLI in the near future. Drop to less MOBO again unless you have plans for tons of crossfire, drop your price point for the HD to the spinpoint F3 to save money with a performance gain, and then, above all else, build a 2500K machine instead.
