Again, entirely relative. Depending on how one intends to frame a subject at that distance, 200mm might be just fine.

So you intend to fill the frame with the launching shuttle itself? Does that include vapor trail and some negative space? I'd just rent a 400 or 500 and a 2x TC.

assuming you are invited by nasa to shoot, i believe 400 is the minimum length to shoot and still get a fairly detailed shot of the shuttle.
