Besides, in NE we have very cheap power compared to other places. In my end of NoWhere about $0.06USD/kWhr in the Winter...versus in California up to $0.50USD/kWhr.
CA power rates are stiff, but it's never 50Â¢/kWhr, and it only approaches that amount for people using > 3x the amount of power that is considered "baseline" (which is typically a reasonable value).
I'd agree with the OP, it's not really very sensible to run very low PPD/watt setups when better options are available. You can pick and choose your reasoning for this, it doesn't really contribute much on balance, it's expensive, it's actually counter productive in many ways (if the idea behind folding is to potentially make our lives healthier and better off, low energy efficiency and the subsequent pollution makes no sense), etc.
As suggested you can toss some strong GPUs into your old machine if you really want to fold on it, to bring it to life.Edited by ocpokey - 3/20/11 at 3:32pm
