Which card to max out ALL games at 1080p?

Thread Starter
Title basically says it all. I want to invest in a graphics card that can max ANY game at 1080p and I would like to continue to be able to max games for at least 1 to 2 years. I am planning on a 580. However, if a 570 will handle it for $100 dollar less, I am up for that too. Also, I want a single card solution, not SLI... so any comments would be welcome. Or comparison charts... or anything really lol

You won't get a single card setup, rather, single card with a single GPU, that'll max Metro 2033.

A 6990 or 5970 would be a better idea, but expensive, and a huge overkill for 1080p.

Just go with a single 580, but don't expect to completely max out Metro, or any other super high end graphical games with a single one.

So at 1080p I won't be able to max those games with 30 FPS?

You won't max Metro 2033 with playable frames, no.

yes you can max it if u use downsampling with 3gb version instead of too high aa setting.. surely you will get more than 30fps with a 580.. just dont mess with AA

You could try 2 cheaper cards, and one for physx, such as:

2 x GTX 460's and a GT 240 for physx, I've heard that's a pretty good setup if you've got the motherboard for it.

Blargy, well certainly I can playable rates by dropping a few settings? what about 2x 560 Ti? If I were to SLI?

OH! and I plan on OC'ing the 580 a bit... so that should bump up performance... and perhaps maxing is too high of a goal... how bout we say play all games on highest texture settings with most of the other settings near the highest.

"Messing" with AA has to be done if you want to max a game.

Two 460's have a bit more power than a 480, but, if I remember, the 580 is faster than the 480 by a fair amount.

What I'm trying to say is, the term; "maxing", is very open to debate. The way I see it, maxing a game is cranking up everything to the max, AA at full, AF, DOF, PhysX, Tesselation, the whole lot.

Sure, you could turn AA down from 32x to 4x in most games without really noticing that much difference, and the framerate would increase, but, in my eyes at least, that's not "maxing" a game.

With a 580, you could run Metro at high settings and get decent framerates, but you certainly won't be able to crank it to the max on everything and get anywhere close to a playable framerate.

Then again, "playable framerate", also differs depending on what the user considers it to be.

Hmmm, what about locking frames at 30? Does that do anything to increase playability? And "playable frames" to me is 30 FPS or above... as a matter of fact, I don't care to go above 30.. I mean if it does I certainly won't argue but I am used to 30 fps and that frame rate is fine to me.
