Ask yourself, can you max all your games? Are you happy with a single 580? Is it worth doubling heat, noise, expenditure, and power usage for a very minimal increase?

If you have to ask about something like this, chances are you already know the answer.
No, it's only 120 more vertical pixels.

2 460s max everything I play @ 1080p, with x8 AA and x16 AF. That said, I don't play Metro 2033.

I got an AVG. 30 FPS in Metro with 1080p and full DX11, tessilation, etc. with my 570, what are you guys talking about? I did hoever sometimes have the card bumped up to 797mhz but only gained a few FPS and the game was way more than playable. I ran through the whole story with no lag maxed out @ 1080p. If I were you, I'd go with the 570 however if you arent planning on upgrading in 2-4 years and $150 bucks isn't that much more money than a 580 will serve you better.

a value budget pc that could max all those game @max resolution would be a 570(should be way enough) a lil lower one for physx with a dual core cpu (wich games require/support all 4 cores?)

Two 460's have a bit more power than a 480, but, if I remember, the 580 is faster than the 480 by a fair amount.

What I'm trying to say is, the term; "maxing", is very open to debate. The way I see it, maxing a game is cranking up everything to the max, AA at full, AF, DOF, PhysX, Tesselation, the whole lot.

Sure, you could turn AA down from 32x to 4x in most games without really noticing that much difference, and the framerate would increase, but, in my eyes at least, that's not "maxing" a game.

With a 580, you could run Metro at high settings and get decent framerates, but you certainly won't be able to crank it to the max on everything and get anywhere close to a playable framerate.

Then again, "playable framerate", also differs depending on what the user considers it to be.
just throwing it out there but 2 460's is faster than a 580 not a 480.

^it would be comparable to a 580 in term of playability and smoothness. even though fps is higher, we have to account for microstuttering.

most modern games do. even crysis (2007) use 3 cores.
example BFBC2 has great multi-core support.
