Sounds silly, but all my favorite games have great atmosphere. What I mean by that is immersion and an overarching sense of artistic unity of the game from front to end. Games like newer Halo's and Gears of War with awesome graphics / gameplay don't have nearly the same level of replay value as games like Homeworld 2, Alien Swarm, Prince of Persia (original), Silent Hill 2 & Mass Effect 2. Probably has something to do with thousands of different people working on the same project in offices all around the world.
Played the first and third Stalker games? Also Amnesia the dark decent. Silent hill 1 and 3 were my favorites. I know what you mean by atmosphere... some games just suck you into the world and you only want to play them at night with your bad ass headphones on.
I remember when Silent Hill 1 came out and I was in grade 9. I only played it in the dark with the sound cranked. What a great game!
