Well, for one it goes without saying. However, it's also against their rules (although, my intentions here do not include enforcing that rule).
Although, for me the verbal offer is demotivating. I mean, I think that I'm like most people in that I couldn't care less about getting something in return when helping someone. My motivation comes from the person's need for help, not from the promise of getting a Rep+. I've been this way all of my life.
It's a little bit like going to a restaurant and saying this to your server: "I'll give you a tip if you give me good service".
It ruins everything.
So it is with the Rep+: it's not about the Rep+. If I see someone asking a question that I could perhaps provide the best and most definitive answer to, and if they are verbally promising Rep+ to anyone who helps, then it kills my motivation. Plus, it makes me feel like saying, "I am not replying just because you are promising Rep+. I am replying because I genuinely want to help."
Plus, it reminds me of the way we wave food in front of a dog in order to get it to do what we asked it to do.Edited by TwoCables - 3/20/11 at 8:01pm
