Backlit Gaming Keyboard (Mechanical?)

post #1 of 31
Thread Starter
My G15 (first gen) is getting pretty old (2007 buy), the keys are somewhat bugged after dropping beer on it. The LCD display isn't what it used to be (I can't even get the clock on it anymore, stupid Logitech/Windows) Time to get a new keyboard.

Lots of shopping later;

I can't seem to be able to decide, I'm looking at the Razer Black Widow Ultimate, the XArmor U9BL, or a regular Sidewinder X4 or Logitech G110. Or something else.

All I really need is the back-lighting, but I would like some macro keys / macro recording, nothing more really (no need of ports on the right side, media keys that never work, "game mode" switches for people who always hit the Windows keys for some reason, barcode/fingerprint scanners, OLED 1080p screens). My budget really caps out at 130$, but I would like to stay below that.

Its for gaming (FPS/MMO) and typing (coding, forums). Never used a mechanical keyboard. I don't mind going mechanical but I however do mind paying 100$ extra just for that feature.

I got a black widow non ultimate and i love it. Its heavy and durable. I have yet to spill anything on it yet to be able to discuss that though.

If you want a quality mechanical keyboard with back lighting I think there are only a few and their not cheap.Deck makes some also in addition to the Xarmor you mentioned but their like $159 or so.If your used to the logitech feel then the sidewinder x4 you mentioned would probably be fine for you.I am looking for a keyboard now too and after all I have read once you get a mechanical you won't go back to dome.Lots of people like their Razer BWU too.You should check out the sticky on the mechanicals to learn more about them.Personally I am tired of buying the cheap keyboards that where out quickly so I am going for a mechanical this time.

Deck Legend. Cherry Blacks (best for games), supreme build quality, adjustable LED brightness, supports USB/PS2. Using PS2 is recommended because it provides for unlimited n-key rollover.

Meh. I prefer clears as an all-around key switch. Typing on MX black switches blows. Hard.

You actually can't say Cherry Blacks are best for gaming. key switches are all personal preference. I personally like the tactile bump for gaming and the Cherry Blues have been great for me. I like your recommendation (except for the switch comment) and just wanted to fill you guys in on some Black Widow Ultimate drawbacks. The Black Widow does not have n-key rollover aside from WASD regardless of if you're using USB or PS2. The brightness on the backlighting is not too bright and if you take it apart there is actually a LED for each key instead of the using diffuser plates with a few leds like most cheaper rubber dome key with back lighting. Other than that it is a very solid keyboard that doesn't slide around your desk at all.

I was sort of in the same boat until I saw my friend's Deck keyboard. Simply put, the pictures on their web do not do this board any justice. It looks so solid and so well built its pretty much the highest quality keyboard you can get these days. I ordered the ice tactile on Saturday so that should be coming this week and I will do a full unboxing review on it. The Deck I got uses the cherry mx clears switches so I am fairly pumped.

Only downside is the price at $180 its no cheap keyboard but hey, you get for what you pay for and as far as I see it, its a good investment biggrin.gif

Your choices are kind of limited to Deck, iOne, and Razer (which is made by iOne). Deck definitely has the highest quality key caps but both Razer and iOne have funky fonts, but the Razer is definitely cheaper.
