OP: Don't get confused, the cache will make the Phenom noticeably faster in benches of all kinds. Games too.
The L3 cache does not use an extra 30w. It is the higher clock speed. Because it is 125w TDP doesn't mean that every chip uses that much, it just means that it MUST be less than that. I would say that most Phenom IIs are in the <95w range at full load.

I'm not looking at TDP, I'm looking at actual power consumption. And reliably, every review across the web shows the Phenoms taking 20-30 more watts at load.

A 100-300mhz clock speed difference does not explain 20-30 watts. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/102?vs=188

Compare the numbers in that bench to real reviews. It holds up pretty well.

Edit: Look at this too http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/A...X4_645/11.html See how the 645 is clocked higher than the 925 and 945? Yet it's using 30 watts less at load.

Explain that. If it isn't cache, then what's the difference?

No.

They're all listed to be 125w on Newegg. There are a couple 95w quad core Phenom II chips but not many. The Tri core CPUs are 95w and the Dual Cores are 80w.

Personally, I'd go for the Phenom II X4 980 and underclock it to 3.2GHz. Save power that way.

probably higher leakage then.

Would explain how Phenom's usually oc higher, even though they are the same die.

that's ridiculous paying for more expensive higher-clocked revision of the same CPU then go and underclock it. if u want 3.2 GHz get a 955
