Help with first build! xoxo

Thread Starter
Hey there, i'm very new to pc enthusiasm hence i went to my first lan party last night (which was a blast btw!) and that sparked my interest. The small form factor pc's seem to be what I want since I can lug it around to future parties and have my own pc that i've built by myself! The only pc i've owned is a Dell laptop which xplains my inxperience.

Brief background aside, i'm looking to spend around $800 u.s. on a computer mostly for gaming and school (Elder Scrolls V! Diablo III!) My friend said I should go with AMD since i'm on a budget but i don't know where to start.

Since I have no idea what motherboard goes with what processor, DDR, SATA, SSD and HDD, and anything else that doesn't come to mind (I did research on OC and other sites, but the information is vast), I was hoping you guys would explain the in's and out's of the hardware if that's not too much of a hassle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance OC

I usually prefer nividia, but this card looks like a great deal for the price!! I have had good luck with XFX products also.

Thank you for a quick response Mike and i'm your sista btw mister
I <3 the case, but i may have to spice up the color , and is it possible to get a smaller case with the motherboard combo? Do you think the XFX 6870 will run those games i mentioned? Sorry, full of questions
post #4 of 38
So this is what i have come up with for ya
Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112300 like this one has room for customization)

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131654

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103727

Ram:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231275

Vid cardopenbox grab it while its still there
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814127490R

Cpucooler:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835181010

psu:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207012

SSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148361 (when they get in stock)

now the ssd will put you over by 30 bucks this is not including shipping fyi

YOU can do with out the ssd though
and just go with these

HDDs:
(this one is SUPER nice its perfect for gaming and storing good amount of games along with other programs at a descent size if your only using to lan)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136296

::With the Western digital drive instead of the ssd the total is 810$ (just barely over budget)

Others

1. (these from what i have been reading not on newegg only but on overclock.net are very good drives)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136296

This will leave room for more money into vid card or ram if you want it

Sorry SIS!!
The motherboard i believe is ATX ( thats the size), so you will want a mid, or full tower case!
There are tons of great affordable cases out there ( with pretty lights ). I recommend looking for one with good cable managment, you will thank yourself later. And yes even though Diablo 3 is not out yet, i have to believe that card will play it! ( you could always go crossfire down the road!) Thats dual video cards by the way!

I would go for a sanbridge build, amd are seriously lagging behind. Why buy a last gen CPU go for a 2x00k or wait for bulldozer.

Welcome to OCN.

The 6870 should play those games.

Also, I'd just go with something similar to what Odin2free suggested, perhaps a different case if wanting to go to LANs (perhaps the case he suggested is small enough, but it looks a little too wide idk though), perhaps this... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146065

An SSD is not necessary.. but if you dont need much space for installed programs and would like faster speeds get one.

With a $800 budget, dont think she could get best perfomance for her money with a SB build? (Just my opinion)

I'm diggin odin's case, color...eww we'll work with it baby. But not so much on the hard drive. Why is 150 gigabytes more expensive than a terabyte? I'm assuming the cpu cooler replaces the standard cooler?

As for the cable management Mike, i was looking at cable sleeving. It sounds like it'd take a long time but I figure it would provide good airflow for all those electronics packed into such a small case.

Andypc: sanbridge, 2x00k, bulldozer...i'm lost hun.
