GA-P67A-UD5 Can't fit both my XFI Soundblaster and GTX 580 :(

So the layout of the pci slots are complete crap is looks like on this GA-P67A-UD5 board. The top pci x1 slot where I would like my soundcard to go is blocked by the northbridge/heatsink thing. So I placed it into the 2nd PCI x1 Slot, and therefore am forced to place my GTX580 into the PCI Ex. 2.0 8x slot, instead of a 16x slot above it.

My question is, is there any way I can fit both the soundcard, and the graphics card in its pci express x16 slot?

thank you!

Is it worth spending $60 for a riser for this stupid pci ex1 riser? I'm just gonna buy it, screw it lol.

Whoa whoa, stop raging.
You DO know that you can put a x1 card into a x4, x8 or x16 slot, right?
That's how pcie slots were designed. As long as the slot is at least electrically large or larger than the card.

So just stick it into the pciex4 or ex8 slot on the far right.
Those slots aren't in use, right?

Not sure if it will bring the 580 into X8 mode or not, but you can test it.

heh, i wasn't raging lol. Just tired from lack of sleep / midterm today. Yeah I realize I can put them into those slots, but apparently it will bring the card into x8 mode. I decided to just go ahead and buy it, figured I'd have more space to work with anyways.

Thanks for the reply anyways

Ok, good luck. Although, I feel you should definitely have waited, because $60 is a lot of money. Especially for a student.
I can't seem to find any information on if using a x4 slot will bring the card in the x16 slot into x8 mode or not. I mean, with that logic, just using a x1 slot should bring a x16 card into x8 mode ...

Because the sandy bridge processor offers 16 lanes internally, configured as 1x16 or 2x8, and the p67 chipset provides an additional 8 lanes. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I know this is out of my league, though.

Ok just double checked a chart.
The x16 or x8/x8 is handled by the CPU itself for graphics.

The remaining 8 lanes are handled by the chipset (and I believe is shared by USB/sata/remaining slots), so putting in the X-fi should NOT reduce the video card to x8 bandwidth. (This is why you get a x16 slot and a x8 slot for video, so there's your x16 or x8/x8), then you have left over, a x4, x1/x1 and the other devices. Something along that line

a PCI-E 1x riser doesn't cost 60 bucks man.

Also it depends what teh PCi-E 16x/8x/4x slots are connected two. Look in the first or second or third page of your manual there is a diagram, i bet one is connected to the PCH, that one will not affect your cards.
