[ZDnet] Exclusive: Microsoft looking to 2015 for next-gen Xbox release?

Directly on the heels of discovering an internal Microsoft video showing WGX’s vision for ubiquitous gaming across platforms (Xbox, Windows, Windows Phone et al), I have now stumbled upon an incredibly tiny-though-significant morsel from a designer Microsoft has brought on-board to collaborate with their IEB (Interactive Entertainment Business) Design group to investigate future user experience scenarios and hardware for the Xbox circa 2015.

Posted just yesterday (3/20/2011) on the Web portfolio of one Ben Peterson, here is a screen shot of the noted confidential project as it currently resides (click the image to see it at full size):

We can glean from the noted March 2011 date above that this is a completely new project just getting underway. As for the black devices we see, obviously he did not want to disclose more than a huge tease. The top half looks like a stand of some sort with something attached to the top if it while the bottom half looks like a zoomed-in section of a Kinect-shaped device, but that’s merely guess work on my behalf, of course.

The main question currently burning in my mind is if Microsoft is simply aiming to utilize the Xbox 360 platform in 2015 and just keep introducing new devices, or if they’re going to go big and release a whole new console with a game-changing user experience accompanying it. Personally, I’m thinking the latter. One reason I say this is because 2015 is 4 years away. That would put the Xbox 360 at almost 10 years on the market. I can’t see the Xbox 360 platform lasting beyond another 4 years.

I'd bet it's Kinect 2 and not next gen XBox.

Why soooooo long? God I hate consoles.

I hope Sony is just pretending and will surprise us with a ps4 for end of 2012? that would be sweet. unlikely though

Unlikely that they would even make a Kinect 2 for X360 that was not also forward-compatible with an "Xbox 3". And upgrade attachments to consoles (like Kinect) usually signal the beginning of the downside of a console's life span, they are attempts to extend the life of the product. So Kinect itself is a signal that it's time for MS to begin working seriously on Xbox 3.

And my prediction is that Xbox 3 will just include a Kinect as part of the package, that would be a huge product differentiator between a Wii 2 and/or PS4. (Assuming Kinect 1 doesn't tank in sales and lose general consumer interest anyway.)

Primarily because of the development costs of the software. It's the developers who don't want a new platform yet, because they have to spend lots of time and money learning another whole new platform. And they are still cranking out some great games and squeezing lots of horsepower out of the existing console platforms.

2015 does seem a little long though. My previous predictions had been 2012, but I think we would have heard something more official about product development (to build some hype) if that was going to happen. If we don't see any announcements by June 2011, I'm going to have to push back my prediction to at least 2013. But 2015 still seems just way too far out.

No way, not going to happen. We will see both a Wii 2 and an Xbox 3 before we see a PS4.

I agree with Vulcan ^^^

I can't see it taking all the way until 2015, that is just far too long for a generation of a console to go before seeing a next iteration. The competition would be able to take advantage of that far-off date by releasing their next-gen, leaving MS in the dust.

That is way too long. They should be thinking the next year or two to keep up with the software, which consoles are now holding back.

If you are hoping to see any new consoles before 2014-2015, don't hold your breath.

It's not gonna happen.

Expect to see DX9 stick around for another 4 to 5 years. If not more.

I was asusimg that this was Kinect 2 for next gen XBox that is coming in 2012-2013 :-)

I doubt they would ever sell Kinect with XBox, because of the price. Cheapest consoles sell.

The wait more comes down to when Microsoft finds a GPU/CPU that it wants to put in the Xbox 3, which could be this generations die shrinked in a couple years.
if its 2015 then it should be DX12 or even 13?!...which should be something to see
No way if MS is releasing new console in 2015 they would hold it back with DX10 or 11....2015...............loooooooooong way to go
