New parts for a gaming pc; I want YOUR thoughts on the good\bad + advice

Thread Starter
Hello,

I just ordered new parts for a gaming pc. This is the list of the items I bought.

Asus Geforce 580gtx DC II
i5-2500k 3,3
p8p67 ws revolution
nh-d14
Kingston hyperx cl7 1333 8 gb
corsair tx 850w
2x corsair SSD force series 120gb

Been reading around alot and.. I generally found the mood to be that 1333 vs 1600 on ram dont do any real difference when it comes to gaming (and the 1333 can be OC'd to 1600 anyway).

P8P67 instead of maximus because maximus was for the more pro OC'er which I'm not, and somewhere down the line I'd like to SLI the 580 gtx and to do that with proper spacing in between and not have the cards 1 mm space between eachother I opted for the ws because it has plenty of PCIe slots for sli possiblities (I read somewhere you were not forced to use the PCIe ports 1,2,3,4 in that respective order, maybe it was a gamble if I was mistaken but It's still a good value card imo).

the i5-2500k instead of the i7-2600k because 100mhz difference vs the price range difference frankly isn't worth it, and I got 2x SSD for the trouble of 100 mhz, I'm gonna be OC'ing 4,0+ ghz and in games at that speed either is good for my goals, right?

Also got a new case; CM storm sniper black because of the obvious advantages with being able to put the cables behind the mb and the case (afaik) has scored very well and gotten really good reviews. So airflow won't really be a problem for OC'ing, and if I ever decide to go water the case supports it.

Now.. sorry for the wall of text but, I read up aloot before I made this purchase, and bare in mine some flaws (I guess, I'm not a pro so there's bound to be a few) but my choices, would you guys (readers) consider them good picks (or if not then what I should have gone differently) and my justifications for the parts, please feel free to tear my arguements apart with better wisdom!!!

All replies apprechiated!

Well i will just say, I would personally have got faster RAM! But what you have should work fine( i believe)

I do like your ssd,s ( i own one)

I also think with your k processer + and gtx 580 you should have a smoking little system there my friend!

I would pick up a 1tb hdd ,for storage those 120gb ssd,s will fill up fast . (trust me)

^- indeed, Seconded here, my C: drive is still very lightly loaded at the moment and im using about 200gbs, Thats just from my OS and a few programs, im very thankful i didnt get an SSD at all..

Other than that, looks good, the 2500k in gaming is just as quick as the 2600k, The 2600k's advantage isnt really in the clockspeed, its in the hyper-threading and that, which few games really take advantage of...

You should easily be able to get the 2500k to 4.5 with the flip of a switch too...My 2600k is currently running at 4.5 in turbo boost and pretty much wipes the floor with any game i've loaded on it, Even CPU-intensive ones like Shogun 2 and that...

HDD space is not an issue, got 3 external ones on 3TB total and a laptop with 500 gb if I run into emergencies haha.. I was considering faster one's with the RAM.. but I didn't want to go 3-channel ram since certain benchmarking reviews show dual ram to give more fps still.. and couldnt find any pc12800 rams running anything less than 3.. might be I could just have changed that but later on, if the upgrade is needed, I won't have a problem switching the ram imo!

thanks for the replies! haha, really made feel I've actually bought something to hold onto for a while

The WS Revolution might be a little overkill when it comes down to it could have saved ~20$ with a deluxe and only lost one x16 slot. Don't see missing that as all the big of a deal unless you are aiming at a physx dedicated card or two.

The ram is low enough profile to play nice with the d14 (not a fan of tower coolers that effect functionality but that is a personal thing.) I don't see why you didn't go for 1600 at this point, though.

You have indeed made something quite solid though, happy gaming.

2 SSD's
One for the OS and various tool applications
One for Games only.

I really was considering something else than the WS revolution.. maybe a Gigabyte U5 or something.. but it came down to what I had researched the most, and I am very unfamiliar with Gigabyte mb's.. only good experiences I've had have been with Asus, ever.. so I kinda opted for the "easy way" so to speak..
the x16 over x8 wasnt really my primary reason for choosing the WS over deluxe, or even pro.. I think I would be just fine with either of those MB's.. I dunno, I just liked the design of the ws and the spacing of the pcie ports, considering the 580GTX with DC II takes up alot of space I thought it best to go for ws since (later on) I can go sli with 2 DC II cards and still have space so the airflow doesn't get cramped.. I guess it's abit stupid to think that far ahead considering the speed at which hardware gets redundant and new gets developed but in general having a really good MB is worth the money..
But yes, deluxe would have been just fine too! Pricerange wise I was on the limit I put for my budget.

you do not want a NF200 board for 2 way SLI on P67. Only for 3 way SLI.
