Need help for a Sound Card.

Thread Starter
I have always used integrated sound that came with the MB and i think i need to get a dedicated sound card. The problem is that i have no idea what to get and what to look for. Also is the change big enough to bother? I use my computer for games and movies with a bit a youtube music. I have Sony mdr-500s and Logitech X-540 which i plan to sell and get something better. budget can be as high as $200 if its worth it.

well, personally I went with the xonar d1, sure I could have spent dbl for the xonar d2, but after reading around the xonar d1 had everything I need, and well hopefully its better than that crap creative hashes out...
If you really wanted more out fo the card there are better sound cards, but realistically (i use my comp for gaming and music through my onkyo 608 receiver) the d1 will do everything i need it to.
also, I am no audio file. I listen to 192-320 mp3 files, I don't do the flac or lossless audio. So that plays into it aswell, and if you are listening to music over youtube, I would assume you are no audiophile aswell.
there are plenty of expensive sound cards, but for mostly gaming, i would get the xonar d1 or the dx if you have an available 1x slot.

Amping on a soundcard benefits headphones that require amping (like HD555/595's and ATH A700s, etc...)

Nothing wrong with the Titanium HD...it's great for gaming, and not bad at all for media...or course you'd really need a decent speaker setup to really enjoy it.

(Swan M10's are great if you aren't a bass head)

I agree with this. Based on the reviews around the Internet, the Xonar D1/DX does audio at about the same level as the D2/D2X. The D2/D2X also don't have front panel connectors, something I feel is really necessary for my setup.

Negative. Those headphones do NOT require amping.

I don't know, but after i uninstalled my xfi xtreme gamer, i have had nothing but issues. I think that is a big reason why I am steering clear of creative, that plus I have heard alot of good things about the asus xonar series, auzentech (expensive), and HT omega. I think the auzentech and HT omega are more for home theater/ audiophile grade.

The bass is light (compared to my D1) on my JVC HA-DX3, even when using the parametric EQ in Audio Creation mode.

In terms of gaming...hmm. It's actually a tough call which one I like more because when it comes to racing games and other non-positioning-critical games, I would rather use the Xonar D1. It just sounds more powerful using the same headphones. However, Battlefield Bad Company 2 (my most played FPS as of late) is chock full of different sounds from all around you. The Xonar just can't keep up with that. While it provides better sounds, the positioning is kind of a crapshoot. The X-Fi can actually keep up with BC2 in my experience and that alone is good enough to make me keep it.

My mistake. Would the 598's/600's require it?

The HD555/558/595/598 all have 50 ohm drivers. None of those require amplifying. The HD600/650 and above have 300 ohm drivers and it really is considered necessary for them to be amplified.

The HD600 and HD650 are all in a completely different class from the HD555-598.
