Pump on fan controller, safe?

I have a Phobya DC12-400 12V Pump which has a max power draw of 18W. My lamptron fc4 fan controller has a 20W max on each channel.

I hooked the pump up to my fan controller just now and at max on the fan controller it runs just the same as when it's connected to my PSU except now i can obviously adjust the speed of it.

My question is whether this is a safe thing to do? Apart from the obvious thing that reducing the flow will affect performance etc. will altering the pumps speed damage it in anyway? Like is it designed to work only at max speed etc.

Your fine and you won't hurt anything, they'll be a point where if the voltage is too low the pump won't start though even though it may run at that voltage once its spinning. Keep that in mind when you adjust it.

I personally wouldn't see a problem doing so. It's an electric engine and it should be fine running at whatever speed you're putting electricity into it.

EDIT: like Darren9 said; there's a minimum voltage; it is hovering around 5v. After the pump is started, you can drop the voltage even lower.

Ah I didn't think of that, same as fans then i guess.

Well once i have everything up and running ill experiment to find the minimum i can set it at and still have it starting at boot.

I'd say it might be healthier for it to run at reduced speeds, since that puts less stress on it. But that's just an assumption. smile.gif

• Power Consumption: 18W +/-10%
• Load current: 1.8A +/-10%

That means it can draw 24w. I am not sure if this nominal or peak.

If is nominal, then peak power consumption will probably be like 25-28w.

Actually electric engines wear less if they're at 100%... it's against logic, but that's how it is.
Although the wear level is anywhere near something you should be worried in a watercooling pump.

Isn't the 20W/channel counted for the power you're NOT using and therefore the FC needs to dissipate as heat?

That's how we did a fan controller in school; based on that logic.
So as long as it's not at 0% of something very low, the FC would need to dissipate less than 20W and therefore should be ok. At 100%, it would need to dissipate 0W because it's all going to the actual pump.

Well the RPM sounds the same on PSU and on fan controller so i don't think its reducing how fast it can run.

Anyway isnt 10% of 18W 1.8W? So max of 19.8W, still within 20W max from fan controller.

In very general terms:
A fan controller at 100% means that the fan controller is just a pass through.

A fan controller at 50% on a 18w pump means that the pump is getting ~9w and the fan controller has to "get rid" of the rest of the energy. The lower you set your fan controller, the more work it has to do to limit the power from reaching device.
