I'm calling a foul on Windows....

Thread Starter
I recently installed my Windows 7 OS not too long ago, but ever since I did, I've decided to watch my internet traffic like a hawk....

To my surprise I went to save a document I recently made in Notepad, a very simple editor, really, but what shocked me is, every time I save a document in it, it sends data out over the internet....

Because it happened just after I connected to the internet, I knew that something was foul about this....

So I decided to write more lengthy documents, doing simple copy & paste, and wouldn't you know it, it started to send more data out as soon as I saved the document!

So what am I saying? Microsoft Is Tracking All Computer Usage, they are sending the information of what you create over the internet, and I'm calling a foul on this one!

We have to raise voice against this, anyone else dare to see if what I say is correct?

I know my computer does not have any spyware or malware, of this I'm 100% positive! I installed the OS and did a backup before I ever put ANYTHING on the computer at all, I connected to the internet to test my theory, and bam, it did the exact same thing when I saved a notepad document!

This is illegal invasion of privacy no?

I'm going to use Wireshark and find out exactly where this data is being sent to & get back to you guys...

Have you actually proven what data is actually being sent to MS? Have you used a packet sniffer to translate the data sent ?. Even if there were data being sent, it would likely be statistical data based on application usage and performance. Not your actual data.

i think a few of the "additional" MS programs, such as word, outlook, live mail, MSE, live messenger, all collect usage states, you can opt out of them of course, but you have to go through their settings to disable.

I highly highly doubt Notepad.exe is doing anything of the sort....

Corporate firewalls would have to be notified of this type of behavior.

You are jumping to conclusions. You are making an extraordinary claim based on very limited data.
Once again...

This.

Also, they have no use for personal data which would be 99.99% irrelevant to their business. If data is being collected, I would venture it is statistical in nature. Though I'm interested to see what you find.

Do you have Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement enabled?

If you have ANY programs at all with an update feature then it could just as easily be that. I seriously doubt MS is sending that much data, and like I said before it is only performance usage. They would not send your actual data. Plus as said before the Firewall companies and perhaps even AV companies would be made aware of this and would be a massive think if MS were really spying on you which I can say, they have little interest in your actual data. Usage data and performance data is much more valuable to them.

I noticed 2 things...

1) The Size of the Data Sent out is always 9.X KB, same size
2) Wireshark is NOT picking up any informat about the data being sent...

I cannot find the 9.21 KB in data being sent in wireshark...

So somehow it's being circumvented, the tracking that is...
