PII X4 955 overheating, concerned of airflow - Page 2

I will bet Money that you have too much conductive Paste between the cooler and the CPU. In that case the paste acts as an insulator and not a conductor and you will get normal temps in the 50s..

Fix it anyway.
  • Make sure you have some AS-5 on hand for the job.
  • Take off the cooler.
  • Clean Both the CPU and the Cooler with Isoprophil Alcohol
  • take off the conductive paste or AS-5
  • Make three small coke lines down the processor
  • Or dab an English Pea sized blob in the center.
  • Make sure your cooler is cleaned up with alcohol
  • Then reattach cooler making sure you are truly on top of the CPU. Any inconsistencies in this procedure can cause higher temps.

I say upgrade your case first. Get one with better airflow so the heat that is emitted by the CPU cooler has more places to go than just recirculating in the case.

(thinking of redoing mine as i used way to much) but if that dosnt work then grab the 212 i agree with above looking at your rig the dust bunnies are not the problem you can easily fit the 212 in your rig good luck pm if you need more help

Well it worked on my 7850 dual core and that was even using the stock paste it came with. Im using AS5 and ever since I got my 955 it's just been running hot. It might have to do with how my case is and where it's at but im not sure. Im looking into going with aircooling though and also replacing all my case fans because as it stands there is only 1 exhaust and that the top fan. Also the back fan area has that damn honeycomb crap so that also might be the biggest issue since I also dont have the tools to cut it out to improve the airflow to the radiator.

Indeed, I've read a lot of reviews of all the coolers you guys mention here. Most of them however, are not so forgiving in terms of ram clearance as Noctua NH-U12P for example. I actually checked what memory is compatible with DH-14, and it said that my memory wasn't. Considering it has quite bit of clearance for near socket components compared to other coolers out there (44mm), I doubt I can fit any tower cooler inside there right now. I'm not really that concerned about the size of my case anymore since I'm pretty sure it would fit in there in terms of that. It's just those modules that are bugging me. [...]

Regarding RAM clearance check out this review of the cooler i recommanded:

Yes, reapplying the paste would be the first thing to do as soon as I get my hands on some thermal paste tube.

Pentdragon that cooler looks good, but it isn't available anywhere? By the way, I moved my modules 2 slots further. It seems dual channel is still enabled and now there is much more space between the socket and the modules. Should I just go for, for example, Coolink Corator DS now since I got some more space? In terms of budget, I guess it is around 70-80 € but Corator seems to offer great perfomance with not that bad price. I'm pretty sure it would fit in there now.

If you cleared the first RAM slots you could actually fit a Titan Fenrir or Scythe Mugen 2 revision B, pretty awesome coolers in terms of performance and price, their only downside being size (since they block the first ram slot(s). Oterwise get something like Zalman 10x Performa.

PS: Coolink Corator DS looks good as well.

If ram clearance is a problem, mount a hyper 212+ with the fan in a PULL set up. Buddy did this for same reason, works great! He did have to use a 120X38mm fan(no clue witch one) to get it done. If i where you I would get a CM hyper 212+ and mount the fan to pull. here are some link's to a few case's that I have seen work...might even get the CM690 II Advance to replace my Antec 902 in a few months.
