My GTX 460 have a similar problem. When it hits 90c it just hates life and crashes the drivers. But nvidia gpus are rated to 105c so I don't know.

Oh, I knew one of them was I just didn't take the time to figure out which it was. Gigabyte probably selects very good chips, some are simply better clockers than others. I helped a guy out a couple of weeks ago with an ASUS 560ti who couldn't hit 1GHz at all, even with a BIOS flash to allow for 1.2125v.

I think you're on to something there, i put a GPU chip only waterblock on my 580 but it would crash ALL THE TIME, even on stock. I got the full cover with VRM cooling and i was fine and dandy.

This may sound like a co-incidence, but i had some little ram coolers on my VRMs but the adhesive had worn off a little, it seemed to be i'd hear the "Clink" of one dropping off then I'd crash.

Odd thing is i had 2 5850's with no VRM cooling and they were fine regardless, i even got a 1150Mhz OC on one at full voltage using that chip only block, no problem for months. maybe nVidia's VRMs are a little more sensitive?

You might right here, because the card is all copper. Rather than not attracting the heat like the traditional forza, it sort of like spreads the heat to other pieces of the card.
With the side pane off, it I feel the card when under load, it is way hotter than my msi hawk 5770 was around the chasis, even though the core temps are the same.

Yeah that explains it as the coolers on the msi and gigabyte are very similar.
