Thread Starter
I have a gigabyte x58 ud9 board with 12GB corsair dominator GT and about to buy a new processor and i cant decide if i want the 990x or 980x. this is a slow build i started in February when i bought the ud9, then i saw the ram on sale so i bought it. when my friend buys my old setup i will get the processor. I dont benchmark, not a hardcore gamer i do play rift. i dont have an uber amount of money so it will take some months to finish. my goal is a lain li pc-80 case, silverstone 1500w power supply, 2 hd6950's msi twinfrozer in crossfire, then at some point maybe water cooling. im open for ideas.

Then why do you want a 980x or 990x? Even a Core i7 920/930/950 would be overkill for your purposes.

If you're dead set on getting one of these chips, I go with a used 980x. You'll be able to get one for quite a bit cheaper than a new 990x.

Overkill if you ask me... You should of went AMD if you wanted a good six-core CPU and you would have your pc sooner too.

I have to ask, why are you not going with a Sandy Bridge build? An i5-2500k if your wanting to OC sounds like it would have done everything you needed. If you need hyper-threading a 2600k. You'd save atleast 1k for dam near the same performance as the 980x.

im a big intel fan, plus i had the ud9 before sb was even around. i just want to say hey look what i have plus future proof it a lil bit. my goal is to maybe do more than what i do now. my crappy rig is not fast like i want it to be so i never felt the need to bench, on top of i can only have 1.4vcore on my mobo now. i burned out my old qx9650 @5123mhz so i have an old pentium d965ee (es) so im at 4510mhz now but with that new build i can be around 4000mhz and be happy with 6 core +ht
