[Ars] Cradled by inadequacy: the 3DS battery put to the test

Our portable devices only work if they are truly portable, and that is only achieved when you're not chained to a power supply. I use a Macbook Air for my mobile computing, and the battery life is a large part of why that system is so useful for road warriors. The iPad features a battery that easily lasts eight hours or so, even under heavy use. The Kindle? Forget about it, that thing can go for ages. Past DS units have enjoyed lengthy battery life as well, but that is not the case with the 3DS.

The battery in the Nintendo 3DS is as bad as we had feared, and it's a major impediment to enjoying the system. Here's what we've found so far, after playing with the system for a number of days.

When Nintendo announced that the battery life for the 3DS would be three to five hours while playing 3DS games, many people assumed that was a worst-case scenario, and you could extend that time by turning down the 3D, or the system's brightness, or turning off the wireless connection. The truth is that five hours seems to be the hard limit, and we had a very hard time even hitting that.

Hope it's not a repost.

Hopefully they will make revisions and put in a better battery.

They will. And then, I will get one.

Remember the graphics chip processes 15m polygons per second, supports advanced hardware T&L, dynamic shading and lighting, high resolution textures, and anisotropic filtering+fullscreen AA.

And it has to process two images simultaneously for the 3D screen. That's a helluva graphics power, ergo a helluva battery muncher.

Alternatively, they might sell an additional pack that fits under the machine that extends the battery life to twice its life.

Anyway, why do they blame the console is a bull**** due to the battery? hey, what about all the other features? I've played it and the 3D is, to say the least, one of the most impressive features I've ever seen on a machine, right after the Wii's Wiimote for casual&for the lulz gaming.

I feel like most review sites have some kind of hating towards Nintendo just because they don't focus their products for hardcore gamers. What the hell.

It's really a shame, but I'm used to that kind of battery life with my iPhone anyway. I was really hoping you would be able to get significantly higher battery life by turning down the settings (even on my DS lite, I only get about 2-3 hours with brightness maxed on wifi on and searching (as in Pokemon white with C-Gear enabled)), but with the older models, you get a lot higher by turning off settings. I'm still buying it though

For the same reason critics bashed the Sega Game Gear and Atari Lynx. Extra features are worthless if the device dies halfway through your road trip.

I don't mind the battery life. It's perfect for me. If I spend more than 3 hours playing then I'm wasting too much of my time with games.

I'm assuming it has to be on that cradle to charge? If so, that sucks. So now I can't charge it while playing.

No, you can charge on the cradle or with a plug like previous gameboys.

Do they still make battery packs? Could play for what seemed like forever on my old GB advance with an extended rechargable battery.

Proof that our technology is advancing faster than our batteries; we really need to reverse that cycle. And battery packs FTW!
