Questions on new build.

Thread Starter
Hey guys, recently I've been indecisive over whether I should overclock my current CPU and get a new video card or if I should just buy a new computer and sell my current one to help make up some of the costs. I'm honestly leaning on option 2 at the moment so here is the build followed by a few questions.

AMD Athlon II X3 450 Rana 3.2GHz
MSI 870-G45 w/ Core Unlocker
MSI R6850 Cyclone Radeon HD 6850
4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333
Antec Three Hundred Illusion
XClio 600W Modular PSU
CoolerMaster Hyper 212+
WD Caviar Black 500GB HDD

Okay question time!

1. With the Antec Three Hundred, how well will the Hyper 212+ fit? I've read that people with Nine Hundred's can fit it in just fine and Newegg says they're the same width. Just wondering if anyone has some firsthand experience.
2. Will the top mounted fan in the Three Hundred do anything? I have little knowledge of air cooling but I would think that 2 front fans and 2 rear fans would be optimal, correct?

Any feedback or suggestions is greatly appreciated. If I need an alternate case please don't suggest me something that is huge in size, I prefer smaller cases.

1. Unlocking on that mobo... pretty bad idea due to VRM issues
2. generic 1333 DDR3... bad idea also for OC-ing multiplier locked processor, you'll be held back
3. Antec 300.... bad idea, better cases for the price w/cable management
4. PSU quality is okay but the price is not. You could get Antec 850W modular for the same price, seriously
5. Buying Hyper 212+ on Neweg... ripoff and bad idea
6. Samsung F3 1TB would give you 2x space and be faster for same price

I'd throw this out the same time as an alternate suggestion but I thought these points are pretty important so I'm throwing them up before I make a new suggestion - which'll be up in a moment.

EDIT: Here you go:
Phenom II x4 820 2.8Ghz, 4MB L3, 95W, C2 rev - $100
GA-870A-UD3 + Gigabyte 1GB GTX 460 - $270, $250 AR
Kingston 2x2GB HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 memory - $45 after promo [see link], $30 AR
Antec TP-650W + Lancool K58W - $135 shipped
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001U3S5S0"]Samsung F3 1TB hard drive[/ame] - $60 shipped [Amazon]
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002G1YPH0"]CM Hyper 212+[/ame] - $26 shipped [Amazon]
Original parts cost: $636
Total parts cost with this list: $636, $601 AR
Win for the same price. Quad core, decent mobo, decent memory, better PSU, much better case, 2x HDD space, you win

You seem to have a rather nice assembly of parts at the moment actually (i.e. i7 860), going to AMD (unless Phenom II x4 9XX/x6) would be a bit of a downgrade actually. I might suggest you just spend on a new video card.

some unwise choices there bro ...my advice would be :
GTX 550Ti 150$/140$ AR shipped
Antec 500w 54$ shipped
Phenom II 820 tray 100$ shipped (since ur buying/already have hyper 212 its not wise to buy a tripple core ahtlon when a quad phenom with L3 cache is right there for 20 bucks more)
if u dont wanna buy hyper 212 u could go away with Phenom II 955 BE for 130$ after promo code shipped
Case Rosewill Blackbone 35$ after promo code , shipped
HDD WD Blue 40$
BIOSTAR TA890GXE 100$ shipped (one of the best overclocking little boards out there)
RAM Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB 45$ after promo code , 30$ after rebate , shipped

Overclock your Core i7 860 and buy a new GPU. Anything else would be a downgrade.

That's why I was undecided in what to do. I will continue pondering over it and see what I can do to my current CPU before I jump into a new computer. Thanks for the quick replies guys!

If you are looking for an "upgrade" from an i7-860 on the CPU front, the only path is to a Sandy Bridge i7-2600K or a 6 core i7, or a xeon based dual CPU system, and to be quite honest I wouldn't consider any of those a large enough upgrade to bother with from your current position.

Going from the i7-860 to a Rana-450 would basically cut your CPU performance in HALF. If you OC the i7, it'll OC further than the Rana over would, and the performance gap would be even larger.

If you are having trouble with gaming, the answer is simple, get a new GPU or find a second GTS250 and SLI them (if your mobo supports it).
