Thread Starter
I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but whatever.

I have about $600 for upgrades to my rig. Currently, I'm looking at getting a 3.2 GHz Hex-core Phenom (~$200), a XClio A380Plus-BK case (~$100), a Noctua NH-D14 cooler (~$90), and 16GB of G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600 memory (~$200)

Can people please tell me what they think?

Current rig:
Thermaltake Element T
Gigabyte GA-770T-USB3 motherboard
AMD Athlon X4 2.6 GHz (stock cooler)
2x2 gig Patriot DDR3 1333
MSI Cyclone Radeon 4890
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro
OCZ ModExtreme 600W PSU
WD Caviar Blue 3.0 gbps 160 GB drive
ASUS CD-DVD drive

Peripherals:
LG Flatron E2350V monitor
Logitech G110 keyboard
Wolfking Warrior keypad
Logitech G500 mouse
Razer Destructor mousepad
Audio Technica AD-700 headphones

What do you plan on doing with the computer? If your looking to do gaming on it, your $$ would be better spent on buying: heatsink, overclocking your processor, and grabbing 4GB of DDR3 1600mhz memory with a nice video card, and possibly a larger faster HD, you would see much more of an improvement from that then your plans.

- added in my list of things to buy

I mostly play FPS video games. Would that Noctua cooler even fit in my case?

Yes the Noctua NH-D14 cooler would fit your case, the only thing people have problems with is ram clearance - please see my above edited post for suggestions on what to buy, 16GB of memory will absolutely not help you at all, 6 core processor will not be taken advantage of, you just need some good memory, a good cooler, decent overclock, and an excellent GPU, I would also recommend a different HD because of speed advantages (I would pick up a SSD with the left over money, possibly 64GB boot drive) - that would best utilize the $$ you have to spend

First, thanks for the suggestions. Second, I was looking at the G.SKILL RipjawsX memory, since it had lower timings than the stuff that you suggested. Do you think that the memory would fit with the Noctua cooler? Also, why did you put in the other cooler instead of the nh-d14 cooler?

I agree mostly with appleg33k85.

1) Don't get the case you suggested, it is completely pointless and a waste of $100. Yours at the moment is fine for what you need.
2) Don't get 16GB of memory, it is only needed if you use a lot of memory intensive applications, of which FPS games aren't one. Get 4GB of low latency memory.
3) The GPU is far more important than the CPU, especially in the FPS genre. CPU comes more into play in RTS games.
4) A SSD is a good purchase, use your current drive for storage.

I would recommend these:

Video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814187130
Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226103
SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226151
Heatsink: Same as appleg33k85 or NH-D14 if you can afford that still.

The memory is low profile so you shouldn't get any heatsink clearance issues, the heatsink is capable of keeping the temps in check after you overclock, the SSD is good value from a reputable brand and the video card is extremely good.

1) NH-D14 will out perform the H50.
2) With 16g of memory @ 1600. You may have a problem running with all memory slot filled running @ 1600. Unless you get a Phenom II x6.
3) Your PSU is not that good. I would replace it.
4) For the video card. I go with the 6870 or 6970.
