Seriously don't call deaf people MUTE. I'm offended.

It isn't meant to offend. Its from JD Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye". "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes." Those in the know may get a clue where I'm going with this theme.

Got the window today! Many thanks to OCN artisan Pedgette! He did a wonderful job laser etching the window for an amazing price. I was tempted to have two done for what he charged.

On to the installation.

I wasn't entirely happy with my first cut out for the window. Although I followed mnpctech.com's guide to cutting a window in a HAF 922 panel their measurements were off. The opening came out far too narrow so I trimmed it out about 1/2 an inch more on the left and right sides.

SerenityWindow6.jpg

I covered the exposed cut with u-channel from McMaster-Carr and I'm securing the window with Scotch 4010 clear mounting tape.

SerenityWindow7.jpg

Simply press the window on to the tape and...

SerenityWindow8.jpg

Looks good, but it'd look even better edge lit! So I got a dual 4" cold cathode tube kit. For now everything is held in place with some electrical tape until I finalize on the wiring.

SerenityWindow9.jpg

So how's it look? You be the judge.

I'm loving it.

So what's next? I'll be adding some purple cold cathode tubes to light the interior of the case next week and start sleeving everything I can with paracord (purple, kelly green and charcoal black) as soon as it arrives.

Hmmm gives me an idea for my 932 plexi. I gotta git him to do mine.

I love that show btw. She is such a badass. OCN needs to have that as a emote. thumb.gif

Today we have a cooling experiment.

The HAF 922 has a cut out in the motherboard for fitting after market coolers. I looked at this and with the way the sides of the case bulge out to accommodate hiding wires behind the MB I thought, "What if I cut a hole in the side of the case and installed a fan to blow on the bottom of the MB? Would that make a difference in cooling?" That's all the excuse I needed to break out a hole saw and drill.

Time to add a new hole to my new case.

The boring side of the HAF 922.

UnderCoreFan1.jpg

Here's the cut out in the MB tray for after market coolers.

UnderCoreFan2.jpg

I had maybe 28mm of clearance between the side panel and the MB tray to work with. So I went with a slim 80mm fan from Zalman that was 15mm thick. Also this fan has a lead that allows you to run it at 5v and 12v. Why an 80mm fan? I can't center the fan directly over the processor so having a 120mm fan would just blow air over the back of the MB tray. With the 80mm fan I could direct it a bit more under the processor.

UnderCoreFan3.jpg

I found the best location for the fan and used a template from mnpctech.com to locate the fan. Time to bring out Mr. Hole Saw.

UnderCoreFan4.jpg

And after Mr. Hole Saw had a quick bite out of the panel.

UnderCoreFan5.jpg

I wanted to keep this looking as stock as possible so I used the grill I cut from the other side of the case where I installed my window to make a fan grill for the 80mm fan.

UnderCoreFan6.jpg

UnderCoreFan7.jpg

With that and a bit of rubber u-channel this is the end result. Don't mind the screws. The fan only came with two and I'll be replacing them with black button cap screws tomorrow.

UnderCoreFan8.jpg

UnderCoreFan9.jpg

So did this make a difference in cooling? Check out my results thread in the air cooling forum.
