Not much to update lately because I've been waiting on some lighting.
First off the SMD LED strips for the window I ordered from China will not work. While not in the description of the auction they flash (think Knight Rider). They were perfect in size for what I wanted though and they directly hooked up to the 12v leads of the PSU. I've ordered another set that should be constant on and a similar width.
But I've made some progress with the rest of the case lighting. I wanted to light the inside of my case purple but the only cathodes I could find were ultra violet purple. I don't want the components on my case to glow UV colors so I was stymied. But it was just a temporary road block. I figured I'd try color gels
. They are colored plastic sheets used in stage lighting. My idea was to buy white cold cathodes and wrap them in a gel. Well I got the gel and cold cathodes the other day and just put them together.
I must say I'm ecstatic about the result, though I may go a shade or two darker with the purple. Color gels with a white cold cathode work great. And gels are available in hundreds of colors. This opens up hundreds of possibilities. No longer are you limited to blue, green, red (really pink), UV or white. You can easily find gels at photography and lighting shops (and the Internet) and they are cheap. I bought a 2'x3' gel for $9. That's a lot of cold cathodes.
I'll post the details in a couple of days. Work is very busy right now.
I've also looked into power coating and its definitely the direction I'm leaning in. I could have the case powder coated for around $50 locally but I have to strip the paint myself. I've read that "aircraft paint stripper" is the way to go so I just have to find some. I've also been throwing around the idea of having the case nickel plated. I'm still thinking about it.Edited by Philistine - 5/4/11 at 4:10am
