Just got back from Walmart. "Midnight release? What's that?!"

Us: Can you check in the back? I'm sure you have them in the back.

WM employee: Um.....the DS stuff is behind this glass here....

Well, I picked mine up about an hour ago and I've been tinkering with it since. Really happy with the build quality, light but sturdy. The top screen wobbled a bit after getting over the "hump" that locks it in the open position, but I gather that it's done on purpose to prevent the broken hinge problem that plagued the DS Lite. Not much of a problem and even in AR games that have you moving the system about it never became an issue.

The pack-in software is neat, AR games and such. I haven't really gotten much further than creating a Mii and playing with the AR cards they give you. As for the 3D, I haven't really made up my mind yet. I hate 3D in theaters and its application in said AR games hasn't really blown me away, but it also hasn't given me a headache or eye strain in the least, even jumping back and forth between the 3D top screen and 2D bottom. None of the launch titles really tripped my trigger so I can't speak for how 3D works in retail games, but launch titles on any platform have never been much to brag about in the graphics department, so I'll reserve judgement for now.

DS games have a "soft" look to them as a result of upscaling. Doesn't necessarily look bad and the subtle difference from the DS quickly faded from memory, but I'm sure some folks will swear by their DS Lite/DSi even after getting a 3DS. The 3DS more than makes up for it with the fact that the circle pad can be used in original DS games. Not only does the circle pad feel much better than the PSP's nub, but it completely blows the DS D-Pad out of the water.

That's about all I can think of. I haven't had it long enough to comment on battery life, but after a few hours it had gone down in what seemed to fall in line with Nintendo's figures (on the highest brightness with 3D on). I've ordered a 2000mAh replacement battery (compared to the 1300mAh that comes stock in the 3DS) on eBay for about $9, but I'm not sure what to expect. I wouldn't be surprised if they're fibbing about its capacity, but curiosity got the better of me. It'll arrive from Hong Kong in a few weeks, so we'll see. I also plan on testing Nyko's Power Pak+.

I really don't see a 3DS Lite coming out that's similar to the DS > DS Lite jump. Obviously power consumption, but there aren't any glaring cosmetic flaws that need improvement. I don't doubt the possibility of a 3DS XL in a year or two though.

I bought mine this morning, and have had a few hours to play it, as well. For the most part, I agree with most of Paradox me's conclusions.

I preordered and picked up SSFIV3D, along with the 3DS, and the 3D characters look amazing. I've noticed that when in 3D mode, everything looks crisper (probably as a result of the combined resolution of the top screen); with 3D off, the images on the top screen look kind of blurry. Like most reviews have said, the backgrounds aren't pretty, but who the heck is paying attention to the BG of a competitive fighting game? I'm a Zangeif player, and this is where the circle pad really shines. Doing 360° moves feels super comfortable, and the circle pad always snaps back unto place.

What I've found out is that the black glossy finish around the top screen (of both color versions of the console) picks up dust like crazy. I'll probably have to end up wiping the screen with an anti-static wipe, just to prevent the amount of dust and dander the screen tends to suck up.

I just came back from best buy and got myself one..with street fighter..I have to say I am impressed...the game looks fantastic..it's a great port..the 3D looks really good..but, I'm a semi-hardcore player..so, the 3d kind of makes me feel weird while executing combos...

The controls are great..if your new to the genre they make the game real easy to play..I played this game on ps3 and 360 competitively and was good at getting out hard combos..but on this thing..i feel cheap because its too easy...even setting it to the "pro" option is making life easy..

Anyway..enough rambling..the system is great...and, its not that expensive considering most people pay the same amount for a basic video card.. if you like handhelds...or fun games..get one..i think its worth it

I got mine this morning and love it - the 3D is great in my opinion. Surprisingly, the game I think it shows itself the best in is Ghost Recon. I also got Super Street Fighter IV, both are great. The build quality seems great and it feels really solid and nice in my hands. The analogue slider pad feels and works great as well. Some people complain about the aesthetics, though I personally like it (I have the black version). It does show finger prints really easily though.

Oh and by the way, about playing DS games on the system: the resolutions are different so it stretches out DS games. But if you hold start and select while the game is launching, it runs it in the DS game's original native resolution. It doesn't fill up the whole screen but looks better IMO.

I didn't pick mine today since I pre-ordered mine from Amazon since I loved their credits and no taxes. However, I'm a bit disappointed or maybe maybe my eyes just suck.

I went today to Target and played with the demo version and my eyes couldnt handle the 3D it was just awful and blurry (I hope it needed to be calibrated). So for those that already have and played the demo is there a difference between the 3d effect?

I hear what everyone is saying though regarding the 3d effects..sometimes it feels blurry, and sometime it feels like your eyes cannot handle it...so..adjust it according to the game and don't leave it on too often...I use a very modest amount when playing ssf3d and it works nicely..the texture's change and the 3d effect is modest enough to enjoy the graphics and gameplay.. The system is promising..although 3d is a gimmick..Nintendo did a good job with it..you don't need it to play all the time... And, a lot of quality games are being developed for the handheld

I guess I'm just lucky with the 3D effect; I certainly have to get to the 'sweet spot', but once there, I don't have a problem. I just turn the slider down about half way because I think it looks more natural. I guess my eyes feel a little strange, almost heavy or tired, but they don't hurt at all. I've heard from people who had the Japanese unit it takes a few days to get adjusted to.

When I got mine at Walmart yesterday, the cashier said only five people came in to buy once since midnight.

After using it, the 3D effect did impress me a lot. However, I'm holding out for an actual 3DS game until something good comes out. I guess I'm just future-proofing at the moment.

Also, Super Mario 64 DS runs excellently on it. No lag or slowdowns. I'm waiting for Pokemon Black to come today so I can try it out.

And Face Raiders... what a fun/cool/creepy game that is.
