I'm new to android, what are some good apps/things I need to do? I've already rooted the phone but when does this become useful? What are some alternative music players?

I'm moving from an iphone, I'm loving this thing so far. I appreciate all suggestions!

I don't play to many games, but maybe a few of the better ones would be nice. Any useful utilities, tweaks, better browsers, etc. One thing I'm really looking for is a good alternative to the stock music player. I listen to a lot of music from my phone so I need a good player

Best way to enjoy Android is to explore it yourself. We can pick out a few of our favorites, but you may have different tastes. We also don't know if you're looking for free apps or paid apps. I personally won't recommend you any apps that are pay that I don't think are excellent, but again, you may not enjoy them..so have a look around. Check out some reviews. Explore Android Market yourself.

1)Angry Birds (game)
2)Angry Birds Seasonal (game)
3)Tapatalk (Paid - For forum browsing, posting in a simple easy to use program. Helps on 3G connections and for quicker access).
4)Dolphin HD (browser)
5)Opera Mobile Browser
6)MSN Talk (if you have MSN).
7)Homerun Battle 3D (game)
8)Guerilla Bob (Paid Game very fun, very nicely made)
9)GRave Defense (game)
10)Robo Defense (free or paid, it's a great so try free if you like it buy it)
11)Rom Manager(free or paid)
12)Titanium Backup (Strongly recommend you get the paid version if you're gonna' root and rom a lot and want to backup your apps and have them restored automatically as opposed to one by one)
13)ShootMe (must be rooted, it's a screenshot program).
14)Photobucket app
15)Set CPU(rooted)
16)Palmary Weather (Paid app, but excellent weather app)
17)Weather Pro (Another great paid weather app, slightly prefer Palmary over this one though).
18)Evernote(for writing notes)
19)Pandora & Slacker Radio
20)Winamp App(Try it out for music. I personally don't listen to music on my phone so I don't have a use for it.)

So there's a list of 20 apps that are really cool and you should look into getting.

Yeah I see what you mean. It's certainly a wonderful experience coming over from the iphone! Thanks for the suggestions, this was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. You helped me significantly in getting my phone setup how I like it!

Forgot to add a few more:

21)Lookout - Virus Protection Software for your phone.
22)Animated Weather - Shows a nice clock widget with the weather. Best I've seen.
23)Beautiful Widgets (paid app, also like Animated Weather, but more customizable and stuff)
24)Shazam - Listens to a song and tells you the artist and title of the song
25)Better Keyboard (Paid app. Name says it all).

There's also Swype as an alternative keyboard.

Google it and sign up for their closed beta if you're interested.

You can also get the HTC keyboard... tbh I think its the best out of all of them.

EDIT simca's post covered pretty much everything. The only other thing I can think of is rom manager, pretty much automates switching roms back to how you like them when you have titanium backup pro.

ConnectBot - SSH into your Linux box at home.
DropBox - a must have.
Twicca - Twitter client, if you're into that kind of thing.

a lot of the ones I have installed are mentioned above. no need to post them twice.
