can anyone help me identify if this is the same lens as this:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-70-200mm-Macro-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001046ES2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300756041&sr=8-1"]http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-70-200mm-Macro-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001046ES2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300756041&sr=8-1[/ame]

really appreciate the help.

I remember reading somewhere that one version of the Sigma 70-200 was much better than all the others, and I think it might be this one, although I'm not sure. Its not EXACTLY the same lens but its 70-200 and f/2.8.

yes the lens is a 70-200mm 2.8. the guy says its 8 years old though. he says its the one without OS or VR. is the image stabilization a must on these lenses?
post #4 of 11
No, not really. To be honest VR on a 2.8 telephoto is sorta stupid since if you want to freeze action, you would use a high shutter speed which would make image stabilization useless.

No, it isn't the same lens you linked. The lens you're considering is the first generation version (non-OS), and the one in the Amazon link is the mark II version. Look at the markings on the two.

Just checked quickly at POTN's for sale forum and it looks like that lens is selling for $500 to $600 used (yes, I know it's a Canon forum, but there's no price difference retail between the Canon and Nikon versions).

Here's a review of the lens. Aside from some slight chromatic aberration and a bit of softness wide open, it's a solid lens:

http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/325-sigma-af-70-200mm-f28-ex-hsm-apo-dg-macro-nikon-review--test-report

Not many reviews on the mark II that I can find from usual sources. Here's one, and it looks like the mark II controls CA better and adds a "macro" function (just focuses closer, but at the expense of sharpness apparently) but sharpness wise, they aren't much different:

Haven't used either lens myself, just quoting reviews.

I say save for the OS version.

If you're going to save for the OS, then buy a Nikon VR since they're around the same price and it has MUCH better build (although Sigma build is in no way bad).

absolutely not stupid. sometimes you need 2.8 to get even 1/40 which is fast enough to freeze a model posing but not fast enough to meet the 1/focal length rule to freeze camera shake.
