Case fan under the processor? - Page 2

I remember when people used to do this back in the day when coolers weren't really that advanced yet, and attempted to extract every bit of cooling using air. Not so crazy idea if you ask me, and might result in 1c to 2c difference somewhere...

Doesn't have the CM 690 II have a 80mm hole behind the CPU backplate?

Well I'm going to try it. I just ordered one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835118212

If I get it by the weekend I'll cut another hole in my case and install it.

Why not go for a thin 120mm fan instead? Less noise, more airflow:

I can't center the fan above the processor so all that extra air would just blow on the back of the motherboard tray. With the 80mm I can direct it a bit more on the processor.

I tried it once using a 120mm. Left it on there for hours, it did nothing to change idle or loaded temps. That's with a i7, may get 1-2 degrees with other processors.

I don't expect a dramatic drop in temp (a 2+ degree drop would surprise me) but its a good excuse to take a hole saw to my case.

I have heard some people talk about the fan facing the mobo, and some facing away.

Are the 1-2c temp drops from away or towards? (or did it really not matter ha?)
