budget gaming build

Thread Starter
hey guys,

I'm putting together a budget gaming build for a friend of mine, and, as I'm sure u all know, that is next to impossible to do with Intel. unfortunately this is where i encountered a problem. other than the fact that they are Intel's competitor, i know nothing about AMD. I'm looking for a processor and motherboard recommendation. it will probably be a single card set up. currently the most intensive game he plays is boarder lands, and he will probably get Guild Wars 2 when it comes out. the entire build needs to be $500 or less. i can handle the rest of the build by my self, but any recommendation for a part or a whole set up is still greatly appreciated.

thank you in advance.

EDIT: i don't need an HDD or a CD/DVD drive

No problem. My advice is to upgrade the GPU then with the extra cash.

No need for the 890GX IMO. The 880G would suit OP just as well. Here's a great combo for a Phenom II 3.2GHz quad that would really add a lot of power to the build without pushing it over $500.

The combo includes a Shellshocker discount tacked onto an already great deal. I'd go for it.
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor + BIOSTAR A880GU3 AM3 AMD 880G USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Otherwise, yours is the best build here. +rep

125W + 3+1 power phase
Actually that would be an extremely, extremely bad idea to get that combo

I also really don't like a lot of your RAM suggestions... at this moment I would only suggest this and not much else for the price

He's probably not going to overclock, so that RAM isn't much more attractive from a buyer's standpoint than the Corsair, and the Phenom II would be more than fine with a little undervolting . Even without the undervolting, the likelihood is OP would never have any problems if he didn't try to get 3.6+ GHz.

*edit* I was just the opposite of you OP, had always been with AMD, found some decent deals and put together my sig rig on a pretty decent budget, about 230 for the chip and board (splurged a bit with the gene, ain't had a "high end" board since my opty and lan party). Sorry for the lil derailment, but I felt like telling a story =)
That's Mushkin's budget line. I wouldn't go for that prsnly.
