What your really after is a X5680/X5690 these are the 980X/990X in Xeon form.

You could always Overclock it but starting at 2.4GHz won't help and I doubt it would Overclock as well as the X5680/X5690 chips.

Thanks, Sir Overkill.
yeah those have a higher stock clock but very expensive, if you get a x5650 which are basically the same an OC them, save a bunch of monines

The 990x will probably be faster out of the box but when the Xeons are overclocked nothing will come near them.
What? stock the x5645's will be faster, much faster....

No worries mate it will be very close to dual X5680/X5690's anyway, it will be beautiful.

Thanks, Sir Overkill.

They also are 130W while the X5650 is 95W, the X5645 is 5.86 GT/s and only 80W while the X5650 and above are 6.40 GT/s.

Thanks, Sir Overkill.

The 5645 are great budget 6 core dual processor chips. It all depends what you want as to whether a 980x in a single 1366 board would be better. Like others have said there is no i7 equivalent of the 5645. I suspect the 5645 is just a binned (i.e. poorly performing) 5690, i.e. it's probably the same silicon as the 990x (but with a 2nd qpi enabled) but it didn't meet the tolerances required for high speed.

The 5645 has a slow clock speed, however it's 32nm and I'd be surprised if it didn't hit 3.8GHz+ easily when overclocked. The restriction will be memory speed, if you're using lots of memory (24gb+) you'll need to go registered/ecc where the speed is typically 1333 max, in which case you may not be able to overclock bclk that much as your memory speed will rise too, however if you're only putting a little memory in then you can use desktop memory where you can easily find 2000+MHz rated memory.

If you need lots of multithreading on a budget it's a *great* choice. If you need pure clock speed, get a 2600K, the 970/980x/990x is only good if you need:

between 16 and 24gb of ram
or
between 8 and 12 threads
or
more pcie than SB handles
or
going for > 5.7GHz

If you're less than those requirements go for the 2600k

If you're more and on a budget get 2x5645's + SR2
If you're budget is bigger get 2x5690 + SR2

To really help we need to know your application and your budget.

I thought about building 2x5645's into a folding rig, but the reality is that 2 seperate boxes with 2600k's would be cheaper and perform similarly.
