2 wireless Routers

Thread Starter
Hi,
I recently bought a Linksys e2000 wireless N Router and it works fine.
I have several wifi devices and 2 wired pc's connected.
I bought it because I had problematic issues with my older 2 year old D-Link WBR 2310 wirelss G router.
At any rate, it was under guarantee so they sent me another new one.
What I need to know is how to properly configure the second one on a small home network so that the 2 of them do not conflict with one another.
Can they use the same SSID or do they need to be different and ip adressing as well.
I have not setup the dlink yet because I want it in basement area for 1 wired pc which is currently connected to active linksys one which is 2 floors up.
Also fixed wifi devices in that basement will be going through that router as well for stronger signal.
The upstairs one (linksys) will be used for hardwired pc and roaming wifi devices such as laptop, ipod, etc...
The same roaming wifi devices I want to be able to connect to dlink in basement.
How would I go about setting this all up properly so the roaming devices can connect to either router as well as the fixed wifi devices in basement such as ps3 and hardwired pc downstairs uses router there and hardwired upstairs uses linksys for strongest possible signal..
Thanks

same ssid, different ip same subnet
Linksys
ssid (mynetwork)
mixed mode
192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0
channel 1

D-Link
ssid (mynetwork)
192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
channel 6

that should get you what you are wanting.

^^ That should work.

Also there may be a setting in the Dlink to disable all routing/dhcp functionality and simply act as a wireless access point, which is what you want. If it doesn't I know that DDWRT does.

Pretty much as stated above, to summarize:

On the 'border' router hook the modem into the WAN port.
Keep static IP of 192.168.1.1 on the internal interface of this router (keep DHCP on outside).
Leave DHCP enabled on router 1, make sure the dhcp range starts outside of your assigned range.
Assign SSID and security settings.

Connect to other router with LAN ports (LAN on router1, LAN on router2).
Assign static IP of 192.168.1.2 to router 2.
Disable DHCP on router 2.
Apply same SSID and security settings.
Choose a wireless channel that is at least 5 channels apart from router 1 settings.

Should be golden.
Even on other channels if you move between coverages your wireless card will automatically negotiate between the different AP's and you should not lose connection.
