Thuban has roughly 25% more transistors and eats up roughly 25% more die space than an i7 quad. It's just not competitive from an economic perspective. The chip performs similarly and can be sold for a similar to the mid to upper-mid range Intel offerings, but it costs AMD more to make.

Bulldozer is so interesting because it might restore parity in transistor for transistor performance.

But to the end user, it appears as the same thing, while yes, from an architectural point of view Bulldozer has 8 cores and Sandy Bridge on 1155 has 4, to the end user its the same as having 8 either way which is what I feel matters most in that argument, granted, price vs performance in what you use is what really matters.
