[Engadget]Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 handson: Thinner than iPad 2 ; Prices

You know who took the iPad 2 launch pretty seriously? Samsung, that's who. Just as we had heard, the company's executives were impressed by Apple's ability to slim down its tablet and, well, it turns out that it took it as a challenge to come up with some thinner tablets of its own. That's right, in addition to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 that we have seen repeatedly teased over the last few weeks the company's announcing a totally revamped Galaxy Tab 10.1, and both slates are incredibly thin yet very well spec'd. On top of that, both will be the first Honeycomb tablets to stray from the pure Android 3.0 experience and add what Samsung's taken to calling its TouchWiz UX or TouchWiz 4.0. We've got all the details and some hands-on impressions waiting below, so hit the break!

Updated: Samsung came clean with the pricing at its press conference this morning. The WiFi 10.1 will hit on June 8th -- the 16GB version will cost you $499 and the 32GB $599. The 8.9 is $469 and $569 for 16GB and 32GB, respectively.

I guess the pricing isn't too bad. It's on par with the Wi-Fi Xoom.

Cool, I'm very happy to see people trying to price things competitively with Apple. I will definitely be checking this out when I look to get a tablet in a few months.

Nice to see at least one company truly try to out do Apple in the engineering department. These tablets look pretty nice and are well priced to boot. Will be interesting to see how the TouchWiz works out as well. My only question is the two form factors - they're awful close in size to the point that it seems almost silly to release two products with such similar screen sizes. I expected the 10.1" and a 7"er, not an 8.9". Must be that "throw everything out there and see what sticks" strategy.

The micro sd card slot alone makes this better than the ipad. I hate how apple refuses to include such a simple convenience just to have a tiny bit more control over their devices.

Even better, it has multiple SKU's that bring it into competitive/slightly cheaper than iPad pricing.

It's a big enough difference to matter. An 8.9" device is an inch drop in both directions. A 7" is another inch in both directions. I think it's a good middle ground, especially with a 16:10 screen, which puts it at a similiar width to the iPad (in portrait), though significantly shorter.

I love the 8.9" idea. I've had a 7 and thought it was to small, and I always felt the ipad was a little to large. 8.9" tablet sounds perfect.

Although the Xoom is smaller than the ipad and I like it's size. I own the xoom and love it.
