Now the things that a phone can do better...be a phone, be portable, be less expensive

So unless you need a visit to the eye doctor or are elderly, there is no reason to get a tablet.
Why are you being so short-sighted about this? Not everyone has your usage habits... saying that there is absolutely NO REASON to own a tablet is just plain stupid. 15 million+ iPads and millions more Android tablets sold begs to differ

I do agree there are certain applications where this would be beneficial. How many of those iPads are sold to rich people following an apple fad and how many are actually used in the ways that make them superior? I can guess

Tablets offer to a market previously non-existant. Personally for me, it's browsing the internet comfortably without needed to sit at a computer, not needed to lug around an "L" shaped netbook/laptop, and basically offering internet with an ease of use on a larger display. AWESOME!!

I'd bet your guess is way wrong. Have you ever seen the people in line at Apple Stores? Not a single one looks rich. I do quite okay for myself...I'm not rich, but I'm not close to being poor either. Point is, Apple gear is purchased by people of all walks of life, not just rich people.

I agree to an extent.

15+ million iPads doesn't really pertain too much to what is being said. Most Apple products are bought just out of being popular, irregardless of social class. Any Apple product applies to that, and there is no fighting it. People would buy an iPad over something like an Android simply out of several factors such as it being a more popular brand, and that everyone jumps to that thought of "Apple = high class or rich" like what you're talking about. Having the Apple logo means something to people. It's amazing, I'm not necessarily knocking it although I don't like it myself but that's the truth.

Anyways, as for the screen talk - I have an iPad, and over the 8 months I've had it - I've used it maybe a dozen times seriously. Most times I use it just because it's within reach and my laptop or iPhone isn't. But I always use my iPhone anyway, because it does just as much as the iPad does if not more. I find the iPad's huge screen sometimes a bit of a negative at times too because if I have to type something out: the screen can be much slower to write on as compared to the iPhone's text-like-speeds. I personally find the screen size to not be a factor at all in most cases.

If I want to google something, like let's say I have a computer problem, and I don't know quite what I'm looking for but I know I'm going to be spending alot of time researching and just sifting through tons of info: navigation becomes a bit easier with the iPad. Sometimes, watching videos such as guides or tutorials on it like I've been doing to learn some coding so I do it on my computer simultaneously the screen size helps too.
But, seldom do I those two situations pop up. And even if they do, I still reach for the iPhone first out of convenience. That's just me.
If people come across situations where they're watching alot of videos or reading alot of materials, then yeah I can see the screen size being a big factor.

I hope tablet manufacturers aren't prioritizing thinness over lower price and better performance. I need a phone to be thin so it fights unobtrusively in my pocket. A tablet needs to be thin enough to grasp with one hand without too much weight, and large enough to fit in most small bags. I think the first iPad meets that standard, so just focus on lower price and performance!

Edit - but I digress; tablets have become the domain of smart phones, unlike netbooks, and so the hype is all about thinness.

You basically took what I meant to point out and gave first hand experience of it.

A phone will be your go to cause it is always with you. The times you are really sitting down and researching or doing some "intense" web browsing, you will probably be at home near a computer or a laptop and prefer the keyboard and ability to save and move files easily...or it will be so rare, you will wonder if those times are worth $500.

The rich comment wasn't really "rich" as in filthy wealthy but "rich" as in people who want to feel rich or appear rich in social situations. Apple people are non-educated versions of hardcore PC people. They are elitists. Apple products are bought only on the premise that they look cool.

There's no question about it - no one NEEDS a tablet, not by Apple or Samsung or anyone. No more than anyone needs any additional computer if they already have one anyway.

But I'm just real tired of the assumptions you and others constantly make. I've never taken my iPad out of the house except to use in the car so my baby can watch Mickey Mouse on road trips. I also don't sit in coffee shops pretending to write movie scripts. I'm also not rich, but again, I make a fine living for myself. I'm also not some whiney punk that trolls internet forums angry at the world because others can afford things I cannot.

Finally, I also have a personally built PC that I don't use anymore. To give you an idea of its age, it has a Q6600 and a 8800GT. I don't buy Apple products because they look cool, I buy them because they suit my needs and lifestyle, just like a vast majority of Apple customers. No one blatantly wastes money on expensive gizmos solely to look cool in public (unless of course, they are literally filthy rich). Get over yourself.

Explain to me your "needs" that a tablet fulfills. You coming on a forum and saying "look at me, my use of this product = all of humanity" doesn't really prove anything other than that you use it in a certain way.

Stereotypes come about due to a majority fitting that profile.
