How much VRAM for 2560x1440?

Thread Starter
Considering a monitor upgrade in the future and I was wondering what kind of VRAM and horsepower it takes to game at this resolution..

I prefer NVIDIA but I see that AMD is offering a lot more VRAM in cheaper models lately..

So what's the verdict on this one?

I would say to go for 1.5GB minimum, GTX 580 obviously, but a 2GB GTX 560 would be on my list of things to snag then, probably two for SLI and then crank up the details.

6950, 6970, or get the 580 with 3gb vram.

A lot of people are hitting 1gb vram limit at 1080. For your resolution you'll need the minimum of 1.5+ to play at max details. If you're getting dual card then 69xx is the best option. If money is not an issue then you can get a single or dual 580 preferably 3gb version. Those card are monsters when it comes to high resolutions.

2gb

Some games hit over 1Gb at 1920x1080, See the red text in my sig.

1.5gb for the minimum from someone running at that resolution. 3gb is overkill for it unless you are running 3 of those monitors. 1.5-2gb of vram is enough for any game maxed currently.

Heres Metro on a 570 @ 1600p, it has no problem scaling 91% with PhysX on. Also check out the other games too since this resolution is close to the one your going to use. I've had a single 570 for awhile and also had no problems running Metro 50-90FPS all maxed @ 1080p with AAA with PhysX (because 4x had no effect on the graphical difference from my perspective) with AAA it capped out at around 1k mem. I don't think theres any other game that uses more VRAM than metro. GTA4 is just poorly optimized because indoors all maxed gets me 200+FPS while outdoors gives me a stable 60-70.

All in all I reccomend this card. 580,6970,6950 are also all great choices.
