I played for about 4 hours last night. Crysis 2 might be the best looking PC game I've played. It is really great looking. However, it does not make the giant leap forward like Crysis 1 did.

When Crysis first came out, it was by far the most advanced thing we had ever seen. Now that Crysis 2 is out, it still looks better then anything I've played before, but it isn't that giant leap forward like Crysis 1 was.

Bought it yesterday, played it briefly.

As i am a big fan and player of BC2 online which makes me very critical of other shooters/engines, i have to say this ...

The game is great. The visuals are NOT crap they are very good and i am amazed at what they have achieved with DX9. The game engine feels very modern, very responsive and just overall fun (you know, one of the main reasons games were created)

Even tho its not a huge leap in tech for 2011 this game is definitely well made and enjoyable, looking forward to getting home so i can play it more.

Not played yet due to living in the UK and it's not available here yet

But I cant wait, some of them screens posted by actual users look fantastic what ever directx it is. If I saw these as a screen shot a few months ago and it actually looked like that when released I'd be more than happy as games almost always look worse than pre-trailers and pre-rendered screenshots.

I remember the very first Crysis' pre-trailers didn't look as good as the crysis 2 trailers now and when the first crysis was actually released it didn't even look half as good as the trailers made it out to be (I was actually disappointed). Now after 6 years of working on numerous mods by probably 100's of people have managed to make crysis 1 look how it was advertised too in the first place but with a big drop in performance due to the lack of effort with customisation.

Now we have a Crysis 2 that looks just as good as fully modded Crysis 1 (or better IMO) with amazing customisation that gives plenty of headroom for more improvements with further mods. And they have delivered something that looks just like the pre-trailers showed.

they arent all. a few of them are real geometry but a lot of them are fake. im pretty sure most of them are just a texture / skybox.

Its just a case of people having no thoughts of their own and just mimicking what they hear and see others say. I haven't heard one graphical constructive argument against Crysis 2, with the exception of too much bloom or too much motion blur (which can be configured down by the way) which are understandable to players tastes, but other than that its straight up haterism.
The Good:
  • the HUD looks great. its really one of the best ive seen and adds to realism / immersion. to me i think of it as something thats physically part of the nanosuit's helmet, not something to give the player an easier time.
  • the guns look awesome. they really did a lot of work on them. while many of the ideas were ported over from the first games, none of them feel out of place. in the first two games i always felt that many of the weapons looked out of place. the shotgun, handgun, and the kpa assault rifle to name a few. in crysis 2 however every single weapon looks badass. my favorite is tied between the hammer pistol and the microwave gun.
  • everything sounds amazing. for me audio > video. crysis 2 lives up to my expectations and it really sounds great. i love being shot at, haha. cell soldiers shooting at you from a long distance sounds really cool. the threat tracer sounds awesome too. it sounds like something from transformers.
  • the animations are good too. when you are jumping, sliding, and grabbing ledges the guns dont just bob around a little like in most games. they really did a lot of work on the animations to make everything look sweet.

The Bad:

visually the game looks great and i really have no complaints. its just everything else that outweighs all the good for me. the majority is related to gameplay / consolization decisions. this thread is about graphics so ill only mention one.
  • the size of the levels. this is a downgrade in every possible way. while there are many more effects and details than in the first two games, the playing field is also drastically reduced in size. the levels / multiplayer maps are ridiculously tiny compared to the first games. it feels exactly like call of duty now. i feel stuck in a extremely linear predetermined path. in the grand scale of things crysis and warhead are exactly the same. however they also have huge levels which really give a better feeling of freedom and a sandbox experience.

if this was a pc exclusive i have a strong feeling the design of the game would have gone in a very different direction.

i agree that the game looks good. its really not that amazing though. far cry was the best looking game until crysis in my opinion. crysis was a serious advancement in graphics. a huge leap visually. guess what? crysis was released 3 years after far cry. its been 3 years since crysis and graphics have gone nowhere. i think thats why many are dissapointed.

It's a good game, not half life 2 great, but good.

I suspect the reduced battlefields is definetly a result of console development. Ps3 and xbox 360 just don't have the juice and ram to handle the huge battlefields I think at this level of graphics detail.

It's VERY reminiscent of Halo with the street battles I find, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Even the aliens remind me of the halo enemies with their shields and stuff, and the ships dropping them off! hehe.

It's kind of a trend lately I find, its like games are really good, but its like they're being held back from really evolving, like they're perfecting a formula that has already been done. Not to beat a dead horse, but I think this console lifecycle has hit its peak and we're feeling that, too bad.

Yeah this is a good game, it's obvious it was made to cater for consoles as well but still, gameplay is good and it looks good. Very hard to please everyone (consoles and PC)

Even tho i wish they made this game an EPIC PC release, i still enjoy playing it as the story is good.

Think about it, if it came out looking 3 times better than Crysis 1 the tune would sound like this...

PC Enthusiasts - "awesome now i can push my graphics card that i paid so much for and/or have an excuse to upgrade to something better "

PC Gamers that cant always afford high end gear - "Yeah good game but wish i could play it on max ..."

Console Owners - Might be annoyed they didn't get the same product or have it released to them at all...

All Others - "bla bla bla... bad coding Crytek suck"

How can they please everyone while conforming to deadlines/deals ? It's hard guys

BUT, i still wish it was a beast of an epic PC release that made my 580 struggle

If it came out looking 3 times better, most PC games will still be seeing the same level of visuals compared to the actual Crysis 2 if you think about it.

It's just that PC Enthusiasts would be seeing something out of this world possibly.
