Overclocking Water Cooled X4 4.4 GHz (X2 555 C3 Unlocked X4 B55)

Thread Starter
I will summarize testing in this first post, so keep checking it.

Out of the box, the cpu unlocked the 2 dormant cores. All 4 cores are stable. My cpu seems to be the cream of the X2 555 crop! Low voltage overclocks and the potential of my chip will be fully exposed!

Orginally, I had a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H Motherboard, but the power phase limited my overclocking. It was not terrible by any means, but as soon as I hit 1.45v, the overclocking became very unstable. I also was using a Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B. This heatsink had a push/pull set of Scythe Slip-Stream SY1225SL-12SH 110 CFM fans. It did a wonderful job! I am keeping my results for the runs I made on air and cheap board to compare results.

I upgraded my motherboard to an Asus M489GTD Pro/USB3 with the 890GX/SB850 and 8+2 phase and added new Geil Ripjaws-X DDR3 1600 F3-12800CL7D-4GBXM memory. I also purchased an EK H30 Supreme LT 120 watercooling kit, a Koolance 240 Radiator, and a Swiftech MCW80 gpu waterblock.

My loop is PUMP/CPU/120RAD/GPU/240RAD/RES. It is not an awesome watercooling system, but it will help!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, testing with air and Gigabyte board:

Here is a shot of my aluminum heatsinks on the mosfets. I believe it did help and I also pushed a fan down on the heatsink to blow air over them. Thanks to a poster in the thread for that!

Here is a shot of my case on air. What cable management? You must be seeing things.

4/15/2011: I tested temp variance between core temps and cpu socket TMPIN1. Core was 6C cooler. Tested temps include this adjustment.

I did not exceed 1.488v in my testing due to poor phase.

I only unlocked to tri-core, unfortunately de 3rd core doesn't even let me boot.. all of this on stock voltages (1.4v).. about oc'ing I'd say you better only unlock(if you can), don't try to overclock it higher, unless you wanna live dangerously, 4+1 phase and 125w TDP is not a good thing =)

I'm now running my x2 555be as x3 and 4ghz (1.418v) estable on prime, occt, linx and else, I could go further, but then I'd have to bump voltage to, like, 1.45v and I don't want it..

my mobo is the asus m4a88t-v evo (8+1 phase and 140w tdp)

good luck!

I don't know the wattage while x3.. hwmonitor shows 173.60w.. but then again I'm at 4ghz 1.418v... I guess the x3 wattage would be around 100w maximum

It's a cheap 4+1 phase sharing a 2007-2008 design that Gigabyte used that is not only known for having trouble with high TDP and is also visibly very cheap. I say don't unlock it to 4 cores.
Don't trust those software wattage readings....exaggerated

Ok, chip arrived today and I unlocked all 4 cores and booted into Windows. I wanted to at least test it with Prime95, but should I even do that on this board?

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1727802

Just to confirm, if I turn off a core and run as an X3, I should be safe to oc?

It'd probably be fine at stock speed and stock cooler, but that is the extent of it. With a Scythe Mugen 2 you're already deviating from one of these, making your VRMs 10x more likely to fry because now they get absolutely no cooling.
As an x3 it would consume 95W (stock); keep it moderate and it should be fine

Have any tips on alieviating the stress on my VRM while keeping my Mugen 2? My rig is in the basement and ambient temp is 25C. I have 8 Scythe Slipstream 120mm fans. Have you seen anyone fry this board with a X4 B55?

I managed to get the card up to 4.5ghz as a dual config and up to 4.2ghz as a unlocked X4 but for right now i am running the chip as a X3 with 3.8ghz oc with stock volts (well actually a little under stock 1.34v to be exact stock is 1.38)
