Best home file server OS

Thread Starter
What is the best OS to use as a home file server? I'm simply talking about a place to back up files to. I'd like to be able to create a few UNC shares, with different security on each.

I'm not a Linux expert by any means. Previously, I have used OpenSUSE and Ubuntu desktop editions with Samba to provide this type of functionality. It is a little cumbersome to get used to, although maybe one day I will be an expert at the terminal.

I guess what I'm looking for is something that takes away some of the setup, overhead and maintenance of a full desktop Linux distro and replaces it with a simple server interface. Is this how systems like FreeNAS work? Anything with all of the Samba type stuff built into a point-and-click management tool, so as to eliminate all the manual setup of Samba in Ubuntu? Basically, something that is as easy to setup as Windows Server 2008.

Second WHS, preferably Version 1. WHS2011 is still in RC and doesnt support extender, although there will be 3rd party addins. I would wait a year for the bugs to be worked out with 2011 and stick with version 1.

I use FreeNAS and it's setup is definitely simple (i.e. fewer steps). I've had some bad connection reliability issues, but I'm not convinced it's FreeNAS's fault. That being said, I'm very interested in trying WHS out, so I may be transitioning soon from FreeNAS to WHS (v1).

It won't hurt to just try FreeNAS out. It is free afterall. I have it booting off of an old 1GB SanDisk flashdrive with storage on two Samsung F3 2TB drives in software RAID 0.

sorry, i havent been able to keep up on the vail server news. are there efforts to develop an add in that would be similar to the drive extender? in a perfect world, it would have drive extender and actually let you install a fully functioning tv tuner

Heres some info on 3rd party DE type software for vail.

WHS v1 is still good enough. Just won't be going over 3.5 or whatever GBs of memory. Should be suffucient for normal stuff backing up/retrieving files. I assume as long as server 2003 is supported WHS v1 will keep getting security updates etc.

If you want to try Linux again webmin is pretty neat. There's a sticky with some tips on setting it up in this forum.

I'm working on a project I'll eventually post here as a thread that will also involve some webmin so it happens to be on my mind smile.gif

So far, the most common suggestion is WHS. The downside, of course, is that this is the non-free option. Also, am I correct in assuming that WHS does not support hardware RAID? Microsoft's FAQ mentions software RAID only.

I'll have to take a look at some of the others mentioned such as Amahi. Thanks
