Very Sad XPS 600

Thread Starter
So I joined this site today because I just built my wife a new machine this last weekend so we could play WOW together.

Low and behold I come home and my XPS 600 won't boot. I pull it open to reseat powercables etc and to my dismay one of the inductors/transformers and two of the caps are charred and black.

I found a pic online of the exact same issue.

Anyone have any idea why this might have happed? I was not overclocking nor any other abuse as far as I am aware.

I don't want to do the same thing to my wifes CPU if I can help it.

Heh, happened also in our offices with some Fujitsu OEM PCs... Of course they're not overclocked xD
This means that those condenser/inductors/whatevah are poor quality ones or just faulty.
There's no other choice but to replace the board mate.

Replace the individual parts, or replace the entire motherboard. Only two options. Hopefully you have decent soldering skills.

Or you could always take this as a chance to finally move on from Dell and other prebuilt junk, and build your own machine .

Unfortunately its not in warranty. I bought this in 2006 I think it was.

I'm thinking I may just sell the components on ebay or something.
Is there any reason that the video, sound, ram wouldn't work from this failure? I don't want to sell anyone garbage.

Or CPU for that matter too?

Two blown caps and one bulging one..

And a charred inductor.
What the hell went on there?

Looked like there was an explosion of some sort.

I was about to enquire on the type of power supply used... But then I remembered that the XPS600 has a custom-built PSU and not a regular ATX one.

The PSUs Dell use are fairly good performers... And definitely are NOT the cause of these.

My thoughts exactly! I was using factory settings, with the exception of <No USB> on boot, due to the know faulty start of USB. Only upgrade was a Nvidia 9800 GT rather than the stock 7800, that I put in over a year ago. I was surfing ebay for a replacement board, and found there are quite a few out there that are blown in the same manner.
