Llano quad cores vs. Q9550

Thread Starter
I have 2 Best Buy gift cards worth $100, and plan to use it for a new mobo by the end of the year (I got the sig rig mobo the exact same way)

How will the new Llano's perform vs. the core 2 quad? I am really syked over the new APU despite me wanting to keep my gpu

well the llano is still basically using the same architecture as the phenom II so clock for clock it should be about the same as core 2 quad, however they are 32nm i believe so they theoretically will OC to higher frequencies

?? I thought this was an entirely new architecture...?

Phenom II is clock for clock with a Core 2 quad 45nm.

The benefits for process node decreases with the K10 architecture have been quite immense so far. You can see this with the K10 65nm > K10.5 45nm process change; we're now getting 3.7Ghz stock K10.5 processors. I expect a high end Llano to have a stock CPU speed no less than 4Ghz and approaching 4.5, and have nicely increased performance (probably not on the same scale as Bulldozer but good nontheless) - at which point the Core 2 quad would be definitely left behind.

By all means if you want performance I would recommend going with a 2-module/4-core AMD FX Series (Bulldozer) processor on AM3+ platform.

he said what I wanted to say

Basically bulldozer is new architecture, llano on the processor side is not all that much changed but should have higher clocks and the on chip GPU

llano chip = tweaked k10 @ 32nm hkmg + medium level dx11 graphics (radeon)

this should kick nicely against sandy laptops with GMA graphics

Pretty sure I've read somewhere that Llano CPU is based on K10 and is expected to perform roughly on par with Athlon II. I remember reading somewhere that performance of quad-core Llano is somewhere between Core i3 Clarkdale and Athlon II X4 Propus. Not quite as fast as Propus but very close to it.

Talk about high expectations. I'm not saying Llano won't be released with those specs but until AMD or benchmarks say otherwise, I'm not gonna raise the bar that high. The fact that we're getting Redwood level graphics from AMD's first mainstream APU is already a big deal (Zacate is entry-level/mobile) especially compared to Intel's lackluster attempts with Clarkdale and Sandy Bridge. It's super high expectations such as this that make AMD look bad when they deliver something that doesn't quite meet the cut but is, nonetheless, a good performer and an excellent value overall.
