Folding rig ~$5-600 - Page 2

While 4x GTX 460 would net ~40k ppd conservatively, it would require a significantly more powerful psu and use more power (kwh). I do like the fact that it continually dumps points so if there is any down time (power outage, reboot, component failure) I don't lose lots of time spent working like I would on a bigadv.

Breaking it down, I figure I could get out the door for:

$65 (msi k9a2 plat or similar)
$40 any amd cpu dual core or better to run rig
$450 4x gtx 460s
$25 2gb ddr3 ram
$??? PSU (i'm not sure what I'd need. A solid 850w? 950w?) Either way, prolly ~150
$ el cheapo HDD (won't count, a wash cost. I'll buy one less sandwich per week or something)

Total cost: Still looking at like $700 or more for that rig complete. It is doable, and I could just build 2 of them, and slowly populate them with gtx 460's as I find deals.

Thanks for the input.
I have a rig like this and it pull 660 to 670 watts and I am on tear 5 so it costs me over $150 a month

They had an insane combo deal with the p67 pro mobo and 2600k.

if they still have it, itll save a ton of cash. if not, look around for an ad of it ( incase they didnt take them down ) and try to push them into giving u that price

Currently, 2600K is the most efficent option.

You could easily do it for $500. Especially if you already have some stuff laying arround, or are open to buying used.

Hmm that motherboard claims: "Supports Intel K-Series unlocked CPU" I haven't built SB personally though so if it's lying then yes by all means get something else. Also agree on the air cooler: you can pick up the 212 for ~$35 and it's not bad

Have been eyeballing it Will continue to do so after some #'s and testing is done with it. Might replace the regular 460 in my main rig.

from the top of my head,

2600k- 300 or so depending on where u get it
mobo- 100-200
that's already your budget.
Yeah I've been looking into the SR-2 builds, and it would be nice to pull ~140k ppd or whatever they do. However, the cost of the SR2 (and availability) not to mention costs of having to purchase the Xeon processors kind of put a damper on it for me. One of those rigs would be $600(mobo) + $1200 (two 6-core xeons). That isn't even a full rig, not to mention the special case and extra cooling required. If I can make 3x i7 2600k's for that I think I would be better off, especially considering they will be easier to sell a year from now individually as I upgrade.

As far as 2600k for $300 + $150 for mobo, still leaves me $150 to complete the rig . I bet it I can get it done.

$10 USB Drive for Ubuntu
$50 4gb ddr3 1600 ram
$39 for solid 350w or higher unit
$65 case

Thats buying it all new, I'm sure I could find a few deals or get things like ram in bulk. I like the discussion here, though. Great input.

you cannot overclock on H61/H67/anything "H"

You need P67 or the rumored Z68 to overclock.

Ouch. Luckily we seem to be pretty good with power consumption, and the home is pretty new so we haven't broken Tier 2 in the summer. Rarely use the AC though, house stays real cool on the first floor.

Appreciate the heads up, I will check into it.

Always open to buying used, especially off OCN.

You can get the e5645 for about $599 it's 6 core and although it's only rated for 2.4GHz, I bet you could overclock it a bunch. So the price wouldn't be as bad as you were thinking however you still have to find a case that will fit the SR2 which isn't cheap so you'd still be looking at 2K minimum, realistically more like 2.5K for which you could get at least 4 2600k builds.

I was looking at it--but you gotta multiply it by 2 $599 each for the 5645's comes to $1200 (not counting tax/shipping.. since the egg has tax in CA it's become relatively useless for me in comparison).
