Fixable 4870? Well, with help.

Thread Starter
A couple years ago my Diamond Radeon 4870 died during a move. Upon close inspection, 2 tiny resistors near the PCIe pins broke off.
I had a similar incident happen to me with my Xbox360, found out the value of the resistor and soldered in a replacement.

Do you think I would be able to do the same to the video card, or is it perma effed?

IF it might be plausible, does anyone on the board have a 4870? And that they would be willing to take a couple of multi meter readings for me?

It's just been sitting, I haven't wanted to throw it out, I just hope when I dig it out there isn't more damage.

Will post pics in the morning of the damaged area.

If it has been broken during a move it's likely that some parts got ripped from the PCB, so the faults you found are probably all that's wrong. I would look for other parts out of place so that nothing shorts when you power back on. It's fixable, unless you powered up the card the way it is and the fact those resistors are missing may have toasted something down the line.

Post pics and someone with a 4870 should be able to give you a hand. (btw if the resistors are ripped from the PCB it doesn't mean they're broken, maybe they can be measured and/or soldered back on)

I'm guessing this is one of the minute ones? I had the same problem on a 3870 but can't solder worth a damn and left it. Definitely worth a shot if you can solder though

tried soldering ferrite beads onto my 9800gt when i broke a few off by accident ..

results : not succesful .

worth a shot though , make sure its thin solder or it will be big blobs and it will frustrate u .. it will most likely get more damaged than before if u have no idea what ur doing .

Well i have WICKED soldering skillz so that's not a problem, and unfortunately i did power on the system with the card like this, its how i found out there was a problem.

Upon first power up of the system back together, fan on the 4870 starts running at full blast like normal when the system starts up....but remained at full blast...no image on monitor, and if i remember correctly, the 4870 had 4 red diagnostic LED's, one was dim, one was off and the other 2 were solid.

I wish i knew of this wonderful community a while back...

It seems like my wonderful mother threw out a box of my computer parts because they were "taking up space" and my vid card was in said box

Now I'm trying to convince her there was valuable stuff in it
