I bought the 8800 gts 640 on release to play...Oblivion. A $350 gpu to play a game I got for $20. Then the 8800gt comes out and I had barely used my uber purchase and that card is about same perf and a lot less $
So I've returned to bang for buck budget and I think I'll stay for a while. I don't believe bf3 or anything this year will change that.
I have a friend who is replacing a 5 year old pc and he is going to spend $4k or so. I tell him he doesn't really need to, there are no games that need dual 6970 for a single monitor. He doesn't care. I don't blame him and maybe it will last another 5 years but to me that's no fun. I'd rather have a few upgrades in that time.
But if you read the hardware report from Steam, you will see that many people game behind current. So maybe in enthusiast forums overspend sure but in the real world, not so much.
