1.25GB VRAM enough for things like Oblivion with mods? (56K warning) - Page 2

Thank you very much for the answers. I'm very glad to see that there are people here with experience with modded Oblivion and various amounts of VRAM, I was worried that there may not be that many with modded Oblivion experience. While I do agree that 1GB is "enough" for most cases at 1080p but I am looking for more than enough so that I can really experience the best Oblivion possible and then down the line the best Skyrim possible, other games I would probably be okay with "just good enough" but I really want to get the biggest difference from Xbox 360 Oblivion to fully modded PC Oblivion as possible, and I think that extra .25GB to play with will help with that. Thanks for the replies, guys.

You could probably run both Crysis 2 and Oblivion with texture mods at the same time and still get a decent FPS
Don't worry, the 570 is a beast!

Even at 1080p.
vram alone is not enough for AA. It also needs a lot of Raw power. The same goes for extreme resolutions. Just any last gen card can't handle those res.

Well ofc vram alone is not enough.

But the 570 and 580, as well as the 69x0 series cards, are enough for this game and many others. Even at extreme settings with 2xAA (or 2xCQAA depends on the game, and you are set).
Let alone the DCII, which is a very good OCer and can give very good results.

This is for 1080p, which is a standard not that demanding resolution for today top cards.

If you start pushing higher, you will start hitting the power and ram walls. Most likely ram first.

Actually when I ran Oblivion with a lot of texture mods, vegetation, environment mods, etc. it took all the vram on my 470 and I did get some stuttering as well. Plus Oblivion's engine is really old and my card kept going to low power 3d mode because there just wasn't enough stress for it. The stutter removing thing helps somewhat as well. I don't play this anymore, just don't have time really. Last time I tried it was like 3 or 4 months ago.

What are the mods in question? I have oblivion goty edition and I've never really played it (because I hated the way mobs leveled up off your skills) but I could test it to see if I can max out my 1.25GB of vram.

Thanks for the offer Balla but I don't even own the game yet and don't really have an idea of which mods I would want, I just know that I love Oblivion and that it has a huge amount of mods that make it look better. I think there is a site that lists them all and I would probably just get 2-3 of the most popular all encompassing or all in one type of ones that aim to just update everything overall to make the engine look more up to date and prettier. I'm gonna look and see if I can find any that stand out to me and will post if I find any specific ones. Also I am open to suggestions if anyone has experience with good ones.

Cool thanks Balla, I think I found one or technically two that you could try out if you don't mind. This one is a complete texture overhaul and this one is the same texture overhaul optimized to be less demanding on the system, they're called Qarl's texture pack. I don't know what you would have to do to install and try each of them and I think I have even heard that some versions of Oblivion don't work with the mods (downloaded, or boxed or something) so I can understand if you aren't able to run them but I think I'm hoping that I can atleast run the re-optimized one without too much trouble. Thanks.

I think there was one called natural environments and one for weather as well. Those were nice. Then there was I think its called Qarl's texture pack, it was a few gigs if I remember, took forever to download. There was also one that added wider variety to the wild flower and plants. Those were the main ones that I played with. There was also a giant mod, pretty sure it was a total conversion mod. Only thing was that the language was in German, but they had English subtitles and they updated it often. Can't remember the name though. You guys should try those, really give Oblivion a lot of replay value.
