Core Upgrade - Please Rate

Thread Starter
My sig rig has just about had it. Last year my system got horribly heat damaged because of clogged, dusty case fans and I lost an 8800 GTS, onboard Ethernet, and some of my onboard USB ports. Now it randomly locks up, mouse cursor and everything, and when I restart it it sits at the POST screen for a good five minutes before deciding I don't have any hard drives and then failing to boot. I assume my SATA controller is failing now. After a day or two of sitting off it'll usually boot right up and work okay for a while.

I've decided it's time for a core upgrade. Specifically, I want to replace my motherboard, CPU, memory, and case. Everything else will come from my existing desktop PC. Here's my wishlist:

Here's the stuff I'll bring from my current system:
  • Antec EarthWatts EA500 PSU
  • Palit GeForce GTX 460
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1 TB SATA-3Gbps (primary drive)
  • WD Caviar Green WD10EARS 1 TB SATA-3Gbps (backup drive)
  • Generic SATA DVD burner (2)
  • Generic internal USB flash card reader with 3.5" floppy drive
  • Corsair H70 (overkill for stock i5 2400, but why not?)

My system is used for general web surfing, occasional gaming (the most graphics-intensive games I play are Demigod, Supreme Commander, and Minecraft), audio recording, and sometimes software development.

Any thoughts on this stuff? I went with an H67 motherboard so I can use Sandy Bridge's graphics. I do have a GTX 460 right now but I already have a dual-screen setup, having out-of-the-box support for two more screens is worth more to me than overclocking the CPU.

Looks fine, this time take better care of your rig!

I plan to! The HAF 912 looks like it has much better airflow and is roomier than my old Antec case, should be harder to clog up and easier to open up and clean.

I also got this G.Skill RAM. I would go for a CL8/CL7. Not shure how much RAM fan you are but for me faster is better. Since you can`t use higher clocked RAM i would go for the tighter timings, imho.
(Yes i know there is no realword_improvement_feeling caused by that)
And nice H70, better that than a warm CPU, the lower the temps the nicer

a H70 is way overkill for what he is listing. Even if it was an i7-2600 non K, stock would be more than sufficient.

i would personally go for better ram. you can get Mushkin Blackline 1600 with 7-9-7-24 timings for 65 bucks, which is much better than that g.skill ram

Definitely. The only reason I have an H70 is I briefly had a Kentsfield QX6850 in my system and that sucker ran hot. But no matter what I couldn't get my board stable with a quad-core in it so I got rid of it but kept the H70.

I thought about it but they require 1.65V and Sandy Bridge only officially supports 1.5V. I don't know much about how well Sandy Bridge works when the IMC is overvolted so I just selected 1.5V modules to be safe. I'd definitely get them if I knew it would work fine and wouldn't damage anything.

That why he wrote "(overkill for stock i5 2400, but why not?)"
This thing gives him the chance to do some oc`ing if he changes his mind.
And cmon using the word overkill @OCN is a bit strange . We have fun here with PC that can do more than average...
And mott, rocker second my opinion on that RAM

SB is fine with 1.65v RAM and you will see no, none, zero, zilch difference between Mushkin and G Skill
