4 x AMD Opteron 6168, (John, could you read this too)?

Thread Starter
I have a question regarding HDD bottleneck.

Assuming I take

4 x AMD Opteron 6168 x 12 Cores @ 1.9 GHz, 48 Cores @ 90 GHz
OR
4 x AMD Opteron 6128 x 8 Cores @ 2 GHz, 32 Cores @ 64 GHz

What HDD config would you guys recommend?

Would 1x SSD (Intel X25-E Extreme) be enough for the 64 GHz build? How about 2 x SAS RAID 1 (15,000 rpm)? Or SSD RAID 1 is a must for such servers (typical workloads)? If so, what's recommended for 90 GHz machine?

Thanks.

MySQL write, http. Mostly http, <100 KB, with 40% of requests using mysql.

I basically have no idea about SSD's performance in such servers. I believe that 1 x SSD would be enough for 6128... But hardware does not care what I believe :-)

yep , ssd should be enough

four sockets ? you can make a decent ramdisk and run it from there, if you have doubts smile.gif
magnycours have IObandwindth - above 100GB/s

probably internet connection will be some kind of bottleneck

Thank you biggrin.gif Yes, I am also debating, whether to get this one or wait for Interlagos (although I need it within a month), but will see

Thanks again, REP+++++

you can use less than 4 cpus, it will work fine.
invest rather to bd.

supermicro has good boards, and they make frequent bios updates smile.gif
H8QGi-F_spec.jpg
this board use few folding fanatics , with impressive results

anyway, you will need one (or more) magny cpu to flash bd bios

If its at all possible I would just rent a dedi from somewhere and wait it out till bulldozer. If you cant find anything half decent that you like at least the opterons will have dropped in price considerably due to BD's launch. Could save yourself in excess of $600. Just my 2 cents.
